Heart Disease
The most common cause of death.
One in every four men and one in every six women die from it in the UK. Approximately 300,000 people have a heart attack every year. Angina affects one in every 50 people. It affects men more than women, and the risk of getting it increases as you get older. Over time, the walls of the arteries in your body can become clogged up with fatty deposits. If your coronary arteries become narrow due to a build up of these fatty deposits the blood supply to your heart will be restricted. This can cause angina. If an artery becomes completely blocked it could cause a heart attack.
Symptoms
The symptoms of a heart attack may seem like indigestion. However if you experience any of the following symptoms for more than 15 minutes you should get help immediately:
- heaviness or tightness in the chest which may spread to the arms, neck, jaw, back or stomach
- breathlessness
- sweating
- nausea
- light headedness
Heart disease can’t yet be cured however recent progress in the research, development of new medicines and significant improvements in surgical procedures mean that the condition can now be managed more effectively. Preventing Heart Disease is better than recovering from heart disease so take a few simple measures to live a healthy lifestyle and you could cut your chance of heart disease by 50%.
