Hidden Inflammation
Inflammation in the body is a hidden killer. No tests are available to diagnosis this huge health problem but smoking, gum disease, long term infections and obesity makes anyone a good candidate for inflammation. One good indication is a waist of 35 inches in a woman and 40 inches in a man. Diet and exercise is the answer.
Hidden inflammation can occur throughout our bodies without us ever being aware of it. What starts it is different with every person. It can be a long term infection, gum disease, smoking, being overweight can make anyone very prone to inflammation. Fat cells give out inflammatory proteins called cytokines. They can cause the onset of genetic mutations that produce cancer or bursting of plaque in an artery wall. There isn’t a reliable way yet to screen for hidden inflammation.

A test is available that measures a marker called C-reactive protein which is recommended for those who are at high risk for heart disease and strokes. But it isn’t usually used for the general public because researchers don’t know what role CRP attributes and if it’s truly a sign of an increased risk of disease. In the last few years it’s become accepted that inflammation does play a prominent role in many chronic diseases. According to a Harvard study published last year, cholesterol lowering drugs reduced risks of heart attacks and strokes of people whose blood analysis showed inflammation, even if they didn’t have high cholesterol.

Even though excess weight increases the risk of inflammation, the distribution of fat may be even more important. If the waist and stomach are fat in proportion to the rest of your body it indicates an inflammatory condition. Fat cells that accumulate in the organs in the abdomen produce more chemicals that increase inflammation. If a woman has a waist size at or above 35 inches, or a man at 40 inches, they are very likely to have excess inflammation.

Eating a diet rich in fruits, legumes, nuts, olive oil, fish, yogurt, and vegetables is known to protect the heart because it lowers the pro inflammatory chemicals in the body. This diet also protects against depression. This diet is perfect because it excludes saturated fat in red meat and trans fat in margarine and processed foods.

Remain active but don’t overdo it. The key is getting enough exercise but not too much. Being active one hour at a time will give you all the health benefits you need. For those who exercise harder, a fish oil supplement is called for. Brush and floss twice a day. Get 8 hours of sleep every night. And enjoy good health.

Many of our fellow world-landers live in poverty stricken areas where the foods available to them are most certainly not the healthiest. Poor areas have more than their fair share of fast food restaurants and less than their fair share of grocery stores selling an assortment of fresh fruit and vegtables; And they are exploited by being forced to pay high monies for trash foods!
