Causes of postnasal drip and home remedies for postnasal drip and sinus infection.
Remedies that are inexpensive, effective and safe.
Your nose drips constantly like a leaky faucet. Your throat is sore and sometimes you have a cough. Your comfort is greatly compromised. You have what is commonly known as the postnasal drip or sinus infection.
So, what causes postnasal drip? Some common factors are:
- Allergy: The single most common causes of postnasal drip.
- Air pollution: Pollutants in smog such as nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide can cause your mucus to go awry.
- Cold Air: Mucus production increases in cold dry conditions.
- Colds and Flu: Your body produces extra mucus in an attempt to flush out unfriendly bacteria or viral invaders. Actually a self defense mechanism, the down side is a sore nose and raw throat.
- Sinus Infections: It occurs when the four cavities surrounding your nose become infected and bacteria multiplies to produce that green or yellow mucus. In this case, only antibiotics can truly clear it up.
Postnasal drip can be easily cured with some common sense and common everyday things you can find in your kitchen.
-
Stay Away
Stay away from allergens and smog. It’s so simple, it’s brilliant. If cat dander bothers you, stay away from the source of your misery. If smog makes your nose drips, avoid such places.
-
Salt
This inexpensive seasoning can also double up as a bacteria fighter. If you have a throat raw from nasal drip, mix ½ teaspoon of salt with 1 cup of warm water and gargle.
-
Baking Soda
Another common kitchen culinary aid, baking soda doesn’t just take odors out of your refrigerator, it can also be used as nasal astringent. Simply mix 1 cup of warm water, 1 teaspoon of salt and a pinch of baking soda. Put solution in a nasal syringe and squirt it into your nostrils, taking care to close the back of your palate and throat. Tilt your heat forward, backward, side to side to make sure that all four sinus cavities are covered. Blow your nose. You will be able to breathe easier.
-
Water
It’s everywhere and it’s good to the last drop. Drinking at least 8 cups of water helps keep mucus thin and keep your nasal passages hydrated.
-
A Kettle of Boiling Water
Keeping a kettle on a low boil keeps the humidity high and stable.
These effective inexpensive tricks can help ease the discomfort of postnasal drip without the side effects of taking medications.
