How Can You Avoid Migraine Headaches?

Have you ever experienced an intense throbbing or dull aching pain in either side or both sides of your head? It would be an unbearable experience you would hope would not happen to you. Here are some practical tips to help keep migraines or headaches in check.

Feeling an unbearable, or dull aching pain, an intense throbbing on the both sides or either side of your head can be a nuisance; a very annoying experience. You may be experiencing a medical condition called migraine, which can be common or classic migraines. Here are some tips to help avoid migraine headaches:

Exercise Regularly

Make sure you enjoy doing exercise. In fact, regular exercise is a form of physical movement that helps to reduce muscle and tissue tension and thereby assists in migraine prevention. Simply consider taking a walk in the morning, or walking in the park during lunch time or in the evening. While doing exercise is good to prevent migraine headaches, do not overdo it. You should always learn to warm up your body slowly by doing stretching before and after the physical activity. Bear in mind that intense, sudden exercise can lead to headaches.

Keeping a Journal

Keep a journal by following closely unusual stress you have experienced lately, and record the food you take daily as this personal journal will help you keep track of what may have triggered the migraine. Also, record in the journal how you feel about activities you did 24 to 72 hours prior to the attack of headaches. This will help you identify the causes that trigger your migraine. From the record in your journal, you should have a better knowledge of the pattern of the attack and the different severity of the occurrence of the headaches.

Try Relax Yourself

Begin to participate in an activity that can help reduce the stressors in your life. Progressive muscle relaxation, deep breathing, yoga, meditation, and praying for example are some of the activities that can help you better cope with daily stress (es). Alternatively, you can spend at least 30 minutes by doing something relaxing like gardening, taking a walk, playing with a dog, gardening, singing, taking a hot bath or listening to music.

Avoid Foods That Cause Migraine

Protein-based foods (such as cheddar cheese, tofu, and beef liver) foods that contain high levels of tyramine should be avoided as they may trigger the migraine. Similarly, try to avoid foods that contain abundant food additives (such as pickles, ham, bacon) and also dairy products that include sour cream, ice-cream and milk.

Get Adequate Sleep

Either too little or too much sleep can trigger the attack of migraine. This is due to the changes in the carbon dioxide levels in the blood as well as the chemical serotonin might be main culprits of headaches. The experts believe a drop in blood glucose levels at night can too, cause the headache problem. Therefore, maintaining a routine sleep or wake cycle is a good parameter that will help you identify a tendency to wake up in a middle night with an unexpected attack.

Drink Plenty of Fluids

Make sure you drink plenty of fluids. In average, a person requires between one to two liters of water per day. You will definitely need more fluids when exercising or in warm/hot weather.
