Heat cramps are painful muscle spasms in the legs and arms due to excessive fluid loss though sweating.
First aid for heat cramps involves these steps:
· Have the victim rest in a cool, shaded area.
· Give the victim cool water to drink.
· Stretch the muscle gently.
Heat exhaustion is extreme tiredness due to the body’s inability to regulate its temperature. Heat exhaustion can be life-threatening. Signs of heat exhaustion include cool, moist, pale, or red skin; nausea; headache; dizziness; fast pulse; weakness; and a body temperature below normal.
First aid for heat exhaustion involves these steps:
Call the local emergency number and obtain medical care immediately.
· Have the victim rest in a cool place.
· Have the victim lie down and raise his or her feet.
· Give the victim cool water to drink.
· Observe the victim for signs of heatstroke.
Heatstroke is an overheating of the body that is life-threatening. Sweating stops and the body cannot regulate its temperature. Signs of heatstroke include hot, dry skin; headache; dizziness; weakness; rapid pulse; and a high body temperature.
First aid for heatstroke involves these steps:
Call the local emergency number and obtain medical care immediately.
· Have the victim rest in a cool place.
· Remove heavy clothing.
· Wrap the victim in cool, wet towels or sheets.
· Place ice packs near the neck, armpits, and groin.
· Continue cooling the victim.
· Treat life-threatening emergencies.
