How to Beat Persistent Mouth and Throat Ulcers

If you’ve ever had an ulcerated throat, more than one and probably several at one time, you’ll be very familiar with the incredible pain associated with these nasty little blighters.

It’s been said that they can be spread from one person to another, and possibly if you passed enough of the nasty bacteria responsible, yes, you could indeed spread it to another person. But mainly, these are the result of a broken down immune system, brought about from the overuse of modern antibiotics.

I discovered the remedy on my own, after suffering from recurring throat and mouth ulcers every 3-4 weeks, for more than 18 months.

Previously to this I had seen 4 different doctors, all of who put me on antibiotics to clear up the “infection”, also having blood tests for all manner of things, including food allergies, thyroid problems, hormonal imbalances, evening eating disorders.

But all tests came back negative. Apparently I was as healthy as a horse!

So why, even in the face of taking ever increasingly more vitamin/mineral substitutes, was I continuing to suffer every month? My diet was fine, I’m a red meat eater, so no problems with regards to my iron intake, in matter of fact it was “way up there” as the doc put it. During warmer months I ate as much, if not more than the average intake of leafy greens, beets, spinach, eggs (1 a day avg), beans, peas, potatoes, cauliflower, broccoli, mushrooms … you name it, I ate it regularly (except olives – hate those!)

Now, I won’t proclaim that this remedy will fix all cases, as there are many reasons why we get these painful and distressing mouth sores. But when the most obvious paths have been exhausted, this may just be the thing to try… However, if I’d known sooner, I would have reached for the bottle first! It certainly doesn’t hurt and has no side effects.

But before I get to the remedy itself, here’s the story of how the problem came about…

Stress. It’s a killer, as they say, and after a marriage separation, I found myself working to pay the mortgage. But that wasn’t the problem.

I was now a single working parent and I managing quite well considering all that had happened – but that year turned out to be the year from hell.

I was virtually managing two businesses out of one building. I was not being paid what the position was worth, let alone getting the time off to relax or “zone out”.

Even so, I was managing – just. I had by this time been working 3 years and was saving for a family trip to England for a sibling’s wedding. I was really looking forward to it.

But several months beforehand, I suffered a series of health related problems, one after the other – a kidney stone, a hernia, and then within a week, was diagnosed with a gastric ulcer. Oh Yay!

The Doc stuck me on a capsule to lower the stomach acid until the worst was past and suggested what foods to avoid.

I was close to burnout from the stress at work, but was wholly focused on the up coming trip.

Then I was off with my sister – complete with a head cold (but nothing was going to stop me from flying) so I was dosed up with all manner of nasal sprays to get me through the 27hour flight. We had a ball.

Got to England, my cold had passed (whoopee!) and I had a great first 4 days – then the first ulcer appeared at the back of my throat. Within hours there were 5 of the little blighters, all stinging like crazy. I had trouble drinking and eating, I was already suffering from lack of sleep, and this combined with the heat at the time, completely knocked me over. I ended up with 8 ulcers. I could not enjoy my holiday, and to the point where exhaustion hit me hard, I was ready to drop by lunchtime each day. It not only ruined my holiday but put a real damper on my family, who had to work around me to get to see everything in the short time allowed.

I was lucky to get in to see a doctor while in London, though all he did was prescribe antibiotics. It was another week of gargling double strength Disprin every 3-4 hours (I couldn’t swallow any due to having a gastric ulcer) before the ulcers began to heal.

To be honest, I don’t think the antibiotics helped at all with healing the ulcers – I was popping multi vitamins like lollies (within reason) and am convinced that they did the trick.

So!

Upon returning to work, within two weeks, I was so stressed and exhausted that the doc put me on antidepressants. These did help lower the stress levels (but took another year to ween myself off them!) However, a month later, the ulcers were back. This continued for more than 18months.

The most ridiculous thing of all was that after seeing 4 different doctors without a correct diagnosis, it turned out to be the most common problem of all!

Candida – a yeast infection of the mouth.

Of course being female, each month most of us have cravings for sugary foods.

But if you have a yeast infection, caused by an overgrowth of the bacteria that eats into our teeth, causing decay, they will attack sugary deposits – and also the throat and gums.

Hence, if you have had several courses of antibiotics in a short period of time (for example, 3 or more courses in 2-3 years) these also kill off the good bacterial flora that normally inhabit the body. This includes the throat and mouth.

We have all come to know that when taking antibiotics, we are advised to take a course of Acidophilus Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium. Make sure you purchase the capsules available from your local health outlet/pharmacy – yoghurt just doesn’t have enough pro-biotics to affect a good outcome. They do however, work well towards prevention.

These products tend to be developed to move through the stomach and into the gut, to help repopulate the intestines, and to get ourselves back into a healthy and regular cycle.

Bit it’s not common knowledge that we should also suck on a course of lozenges developed specifically for repopulating the mouth and throat. This can take several courses, but persistence is the key here.

I tried a course of these lozenges as a last resort – and what an amazing thing! After my first course I had only one ulcer, compared to 4 at a time, and even the cold sores were diminished. After a second course the following month, I no longer have any mouth ulcers at all. However, Easter this year was a small trial – one ulcer due to excessive gluttony on chocolate! But a small thing compared to the enjoyment – at long last!

I won’t mention the brand name here, as I’m sure there are many other products of a similar nature available. However, if you describe a product of this type to your pharmacist, he/she should be able to supply you with a local product.

And the best thing? Being blissfully pain free, and finally regaining control of my life.

And I can eat Vegemite without fear of consequences! And Chocolate…

  1. Good post!
    Thanks for the tip!

  2. Thanks so much I just read your article and me getting mouth ulcers all the time makes so much sense now! I had some pro-active yogurts in the fridge and i have just kind of let them sit on my ulcers as i ate them and they feel much better already! I am going to have to cut out my sweet foods!

  3. Wow thanks for that, I might try that I have had 2 ulcers since january 13th 2006!!! since i gave up smoking i also had a 3rd in my throat just past my tonsils but that disappeared 3 months ago.

The 2 remaining ulcers seem to move to neighboring tissue and leave scars, I have one on my tongue about the size of a 5p piece which affects my speech sometimes and really gets me down the one on my cheek is also painful when I talk as my teeth seem to rub it.

The strange thing is sometimes these ulcers are not painful and appear to be in remission but then a day later they are back causing me great pain.

if you could mail the brand names to me id be most grateful:
    dominicwilliams@e-wire.net.au

  4. Something as simple as that, huh??! Wow. I’ll have to stock up on this stuff. I’ve not been able to comfortably swallow for the past 2 weeks due to a chronic throat ulcer + 4 mouth ulcers…Prior to getting this, I was on strong antibiotics for 15 days. I got the ulcers within 2 days of finishing that prescription.

  5. I find my ulcers get triggered by sweet sugary foods….It’s definitely connected to digestion for me. I get thrush at the same time. Grapefruit seed extract is meant to stop candida, so im going to give it a go…..

  6. Thanks for the article, it really helps. I often contracted with throat ulcer for every 2-3 months. I usually took the antibiotics wc later on lead to stomach ulcer. I’ve followed your tips…and it somehow worked, I’m free of throat and stomach ulcers for the time being..I may have to reduce sugar intake though

  7. Hi, this is pooja bhatia from new delhi , india
My daughter aged 3 has got throat ulcer for the first time. she is in incredible pain and refuses to eat anything, along with this she has developed high fever. The doctor has put her on antibiotics and anti pyretics. Can you please help me out.

  8. Hi, thanks for the post, it helped a lot. I started with a chest infetion and an ear infection in each ear the result…..antibiotics. But the first lot made me really ill, i had them changed. been on the seccond lot a few days and i noticed my throat begging to hurt and ulcers appearing in my mouth, my throat was so painful and fel very swollen last night, my partner had a look with a torch and it is ulcers again, i have had it before, it was stress. This time im stressed and on antibiotics.
I know it cant be sweet foods with my though lol, im lactose, milk, dairy, wheat, gluten intolerant so cant have too much that isnt 100% natural or specially made.
Thanks anyway, though i must say i am not sure whether to come of my anitibiotics now or stay on them.

  9. Hi Kyleigh: That sounds nasty! Yes, quite probably not sugar related – sounds to me like you’re lacking in VitC, Zinc and Lysine. These are all found in good quality cold sore preparations, commonly found at most pharmacies and health shops. Lysine is the most important, but zinc and VitC help with the body’s absorbsion of Lysine (which goes a long way towards healing of the gum and soft tissues.) Lysine has the added bonus of being beneficial to the skin (it helps with production of collagen!) 1000mg of Lysine a day for a week should sort you out. make sure your iron levels are good too, it goes hand in hand with VitC.
Continue with the course of antibitics though – those infections must be cleared up. Good luck.

  10. Hi, i was so interested to read about your problem. I am at my wits end as have always suffered from very sore throats as child. Had tonsils out and then only had it once or twice a year. Always had to take antbiotics for it, I am 35 now. It was only this year that my usual sore throat developed into incredibly painful throat ulcers. I was in tears and tried everything, was prescribed two courses of antibiotics the second of which made me so sick. I had them all over my throat ranging in size and i have never felt to exhausted and run down in my life. It went on for two months. They have gone now but keep almost flaring up twice a week or so but never to the same degree. I cant seem to get better and if i excert myself in any way they begin to come back. As a really active and healthy person i just have no idea what to do.I feel like it is something way more serious but again have hasd the tt swabs, blood tests etc. Kind of relieved to have found your story. Can you email me the details of what you used please!!!!

  11. Hi Sherri,
Yep, that’s the same problem I had, and we’re going to see more of it as we get older and others have the same symptoms.
Firstly it looks as though the product I use is not widely available as yet overseas, so cut back on your sugar intake – and I mean NO added sugar at all, no sweets, no honey, and no chocolate. The nasties will jump on that very quickly.
I’ve noticed that whenever I exercise when I have an ulcer at the back of the throat, the energy is sapped from the healing process – so take extra Lysine to combat this and a good multi vitamin. Make sure you keep up your intake of iron also – this is needed to give extra energy during the healing process.
Try to refrain from using mouth washes – and try brushing your teeth with iodised salt instead of toothepaste. Most toothpastes have an ingredient that irritates the gum, which can lead to more lesions in the mouth.
And get plenty of sleep – early nights and good quality sleep also play a major part in healing.
    Get better soon!

  12. Thank you so much for your helpful advice i really appreciate it. Am feeling hopeful already that i could be rid of this affliction soon, and at the very least control it!

  13. Hi all!
Just a quick note to let you all know that I’ve discovered Chamomile Tea! I know – it’s been around for decades, butread on…
I had a slight re-lapse with an ulcer on my tonsil(self inflicted – stress, lack of sleep + too much chocolate one week) and after reading about the anti inflammatory properties (and of course the well known calming properties) I have since taken up drinking 3 cups of tea per day. It certainly helps keeps the soreness down, and this helped speed up the healing process!
I also used to suffer painful muscle spasms in the neck and shoulders, brought on by a motorcycle injury years ago, resulting in arthritis during winter. I have just gone through an entire New Zealand winter without so much as a twinge of pain. As I have been sipping chamomile tea for more than 4 months, I can only assume that the Tea has kept the imflammation at bay, so – no pain!
Chamomile tea is also very good for the digestive system, including the stomach lining, having a sootheing affect to the gut. It is also very good for soothing stomach ulcers and keeping the inflammation down to help them heal better. I can only assume that being an all natural product with naturally strong anti-inflammatory properties, it would be great for those combating cancer – or indeed as part of an every day preventative regime.
    Go to it everyone!

  14. Hi! I’m so happy to have found other people with the same problem as me. I have always gotten run down very easily (one night of less than 6 hours of sleep and I’m sick with a sore throat, headache etc for at least a week). However, the sore throat has within the last couple of years turned into the ulcers. I have also gone through gobs of antibiotics, throat cultures, you name it. I just actually pinpointed today, though, that the last few months I have been getting these horrible ulcers in my throat and feeling very rundown the first or second day of my period. That’s how I found this sight, I was looking for some type of corrolation. I’m going to my doctor in the morning, but I’ve already started eating some yogurt, taking extra vitamin C and lysine. If you have any other suggestions, I would welcome them. Thanks again for sharing your story.

  15. thanks. I just realised tonight that having a razor-blade throat for 3 weeks was not normal , despite having been very run down and stressed in last few months. I can hardly swallow or eat, and am finding talking hard. I am going to chemist 1st thing to look for candida lozenges, lysine, vit C and iron. Am also about to hunt down the chamomile tea in the cupboard! Have not touched anti biotics for couple of years but do suffer from candida regularly – didnt realise it could harm my throat too!

  16. Hi there!
Its not nice but it is nice to know we’re all not suffering alone! lol
Please can you just clear this up for me – I need to eat pro biotic yogurt to prevent the outbreaks and the candida lozenges when I do get an outbreak? What do you use Stargirl?
    Thanks
    x

  17. Hi Claire, Sorry for the delay in getting back to you.
I’ve had a few hiccups with regards to my stomach ulcer and have been quite ill due to the Doc not diagnosing me correctly.
Seems I had Gastritus – not an ulcer – and have finaly sorted that by ordering and taking Siberian Pine Nut oil an hour before each meal. Has sorted my gastric problems speedily!
It turned out that Losec (Omeprezole) was aggravating the problem.
Now back to what I do whenever I get an outbreak – I simply control it by taking the candida tabs from a week prior to my monthly (before they start) and for approx 3 days during. However, we are all different, so monitor yourself to see how you go – you may not need to start so early, but go later?
I always keep Lysine caps handy – and Zovirax (for cold sores) as I seem to be more prone than I used to. A healthy diet is great – heaps of fresh veg and fruit, but it’s hard to keep it up in todays society. Keep clear of processed foods and packets.
Even though I’ve been tested for Gluten intollerance and Milk allergy, and found to be negative, by cutting out all of these, I have healed my gut far quicker than by continuing my normal diet. By healing my gastric problems, my body is now able to uptake more nutrients, thereby allowing the body to fight the bad bacteria – so I don’t use the candida tabs so much these days ~ once every 3 months or so.
Keep it up – it may take a year or so, but it’s worth it – and try to stay away from using antibiotics if possible.

  18. I have a problem with ulcers on my tongue rite at the back near my throat, i have great diffuculty swallowing food and on occassion a large amount of blood will come from the area when i am asleep, i have consulted a doctor and was told i was fine but thats how good the UK National Health Service is, I have tried things to get rid of the problem like, gargling salt water, gargling TCP and a number of anti inflammation drugs but nothing has healped, the area affected is about the size of a 2 pence coin and to put it bluntly, has been pissing me off for a number of weeks now.

  19. I’m so glad I found this page, I have been suffering from recurring throat ulcers for over a year and no doctor has been able to tell me what’s wrong. The worst thing is that when I get my ulcers, my glands become very swollen and painful as well and so as well as not being able to swallow, my neck and shoulders are painful and make me feel very unwell. I have had antibiotics, throat swabs etc. I did try one type of anti fungal medication way back which was prescribed by a doctor but that didn’t work and I also tried antifungal lozenges which didn’t work. However, having read your blog I’m going to try again with the lozenges and probiotics. I will also dramatically cut down on my sugar intake as I do eat a lot of sugary foods and will see if that helps! Thanks again!

  20. I came across this page whilst trying to find a correlation between my monthly cycle and my painful monthly throat ulcers (among other symptoms), which dramatically disappear a few days after my cycle begins. I have suffered this problem for many years, and was only relieved during the months when I was pregnant. I definately think that the vast intake of sugary foods that I consume during my pms phase now causes the ulcers to appear when they do, so will be trying the lozenges etc and trying to reduce my intake of sugary foods (hope my willpower kicks in). Many thanks, I am so glad that I found this page!

  21. Hi Joshua,
Sorry to har of your problem – sounds painfull! I do hope they are only ulcers, as I’ve never had any that bled at all, though if I bit my gum or lip (abd bad enough for them to bleed) that would usually cause an ulcer to form.
Anti inflammatories should help to keep the sweeling down and speed up healing, but also stop all sugar in your diet if possible, and any yeast products (that includes booze! – sorry!)
If this doesn’t sort things out in 3 months tme, I would be pushing the doc to do more tests. It could possibly be something in your diet, or something missing from your diet.
    Good luck!

  22. Hi Lisa and Caroline!
Yes, the docs are so busy today, and underpaid, that they tend to just throw antibiotics at most things they don’t have the time (or resources) to investigate. If it doesn’t look life-threatening, antibiotics are advised. Unfortunately these just enforce the problem – which sadly, is on the rise.
Refined sugars, foods, even milk! Stick to as natural as possible – if you just can’t go without sugar, substitue honey, manuka honey if you can afford it (from NZ!) as it’s healing properties are legendary. And go for soya based milk products and see if the change helps any.
It’s interesting to note that since I discovered this correlation between sugary foods, overuse of antibiotics, bad bacteria proliferation, and especially during the pms stage of the month, when the female body is at it’s lowest, that by making a few small dietary changes (and sticking to it!) I have not had an ulcer of any form for 18months or more. And no cavities either… and no colds!
    Funny that!

  23. i can very much relate to what you went through but my partner is going through it at the moment and the fact that u didnt give the name of the soloution has not helped…………not 1 bit

  24. Hello ‘Upset’,

Perhaps you had better read the article once again – the solution is to get to a reputable pharmacy and ask for a course of Acidophilus Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, in a capsule/losenge form, as the amounts in general yogurts fall far short of the requirements. There are likely several varieties of capsules available over the counter, but if not in your country, contact a homeopathy specialist – they should be able to put you on the right track.
I can only advise – the Bliss Technologies Throatgaurd that I used myself is not widely known outside of NZ, and apparently not widely distributed as yet.
But keep an eye and ear out for it.

  25. I have an ulcerated throat and tongue for 10 days now and haven’t been able to eat for the last two. It is the first time I’ve had this problem and is really depressing as I love to eat! Will the bacteria cultures help to heal the ulcers and soothe the pain or just heal them?

  26. Hi Ash,
I’m afraid the cultures will not help much with the pain – but they will speed up healing and prevent further out-breaks.
I’ve found over the counter anti-inflammatories are good at keeping the pain to a minimum, but if you suffer from stomach irrations, steer clear of these. Best bet is to use the Cammomile flower tea I mentioned – 3-4 times a day. This has the added bonus of calming (reducing stress levels) and is a good all round tonic. Tastes good too.
However, you say you’re not eating? I know it’s painful, but youb MUST eat something – even if only to pop a few multi vitamins. You must give the body the goods it needs to heal itself.
Sucking on ice cubes (water only) is also another way to keep swelling down. However, this only gives temporary relief.
Gargling Aspirin (I used Double Strength Disprin) one at a time, as required gave 2hours relief. Try it.
When on holiday I carried a packet of DS Disprin and a bottle of water in my bag – it’s the only thing that got me through the day!

  27. great topic ..ty stargirl..im a pharmacist and im suffering from a chronic throat ulcers for about 5 years i tried many antibiotics mainly amoxi-claves but the ulcers disappeares for one week and it come again with great pain..and the pain pushs me to look for a treatment for my problem ..i ate probiotic yoghurt and i start chammomile…if anything else is needed plz tell me.and plz send me the brand name of lysin lozengs…ty very much

  28. Hi everyone,
A really good relief to read everybody’s comments and experiences with these horrendous mouth and throat ulcers. I have suffered from mouth ulcers since childhood and 4 weeks ago came down with a severe “sore throat”. Thinking I’d caught it off one of the kids, it persisted and became much worse than your average sore throat. After two trips to two different doctors and two different courses of antibiotics, nothing has worked. Its only through my experience with mouth ulcers and reading all your comments that I’m now convinced what I’ve been suffering is a severe ulcerated throat. I’ve since stopped all antibiotics and will be visiting the pharmacy first thing for the items Stargirl has mentioned. I’m most interested to hear from anyone in regards to specific systems so I can compare. These are mine: THE sorest throat (feels like swallowing shards of glass – not that I’ve actually tried that!), no relief from swallowing, “heat” coming from deep inside the throat and travelling up to the ears, general feeling of “unwell”, too painful to eat/drink or swallow, worse at night in bed (probably because the throat is dryer than when you’re awake). That’s about it. Comforting and helpful to read everybody’s comments.

  29. many thanks to all fir ur comments. I an suffering from my first dose of ulcerated throat and would never have thought it could be so painful!!! Childbirth is better! I will now try ur suggestons and hopefully be rid of this soon . X

  30. So relieved to hear that this is not some kind of freak affliction!!! I use Zand Herbal Mist throat spray at the very first tingle. The stuff is pretty good…but if I don’t catch it right away (and start sleeping and not stressing out) the ulcers come and we all know the rest of that story.

  31. gargling with salt helped me most, lozenges also.

  32. Hi! Amazing – that’s the answer! Thank you so much. Could you please email me the name of the lozenges you used? Are they prescription only?
    Thanks again,
    Katherine. (k_lond@hotmail.com)

  33. Hi Jacki,
I would suggest that (if you haven’t as yet) please continue taking the full course of antibiotics – you sound to have an infection (the heat?) and this needs addressing first. Take the entire course then if you manage to get your hands on the BLIS Throatguard or Travelgaurd, follow the directions on the labels.
I can’t stress this enough – if your GP/Doctor suspects infection, take the antibiotics prescribed – the entire course – then follow the regime. It will help to stop any further outbreaks – and I do stress that you give it a good 3 months of taking it to get right on top of the problem.

  34. Hi Katherine – forgot to add – its not a drug, its made from natural products, so its not on prescription. You should be able to buy it straight off the shelf.

  35. Hello,
I too am relieved of hearing that there may be a fix to this!
I am a (fairly healthy) 20 year old male suffering my first throat ulcer! It sucks! I started feeling the pain coming on 8 days ago, and started oil oregano treatment because that’s what I usually do for sore throats, but it never worked. Just under a week ago I went to the doctor and she said that it’s a viral infection and that I just have to wait it out. I also got a cold sore (which I am generally prone to), but it already went away. The sore absolutely kills. I don’t have several small sores like other people seem to describe, I have one sore at the back of my throat (right next to the thing that hangs down in the back of your throat) that is a bit bigger than a nickel in size. Can you please let me know what exactly to get to get rid of this thing? I don’t have any other symptoms. Will I be able to get it from pharmacies and/or natural health food stores? How long did you take them for?
    Thanks so much!
If possible, please send the name of the pills to jasonabboud@hotmail.com

  36. Sorry.. I just realized that you already put the name of the cultures clearly in your post. But I am still just wondering how long/how often to take them for?

  37. Hi Jay – and everyone,
In answer to your question, I’m still taking them, even now. I always keep a bottle of lozenges handy, as we can’t escape the over use of anti biotics – it’s in the very meat we eat!
In answer to where to get them: I’ve discovered that they are no widely available as yet, but are sold in Scotland (which is a bit strange) and in Australia and NZ.
I do know that the company is in the process of getting licence to distribute through re-sellers in the States etc, but is wading through the red tape (FDA?) before it can do so.
If you do a Google for BLIS Throatgaurd New Zealand, I’m sure you will find a website like Pharmacy Direct – they send overseas. Plus, at least you’ll know it’s the real deal – and not a cheap copy!

  38. Hi everyone,

if this helps anyone I’ll be glad- I had my tonsils removed but then I just kept getting throat ulcers instead, at least every month, accompanied by tiredness. I even had to have a biopsy, which came back negative. Then I tried cutting out gluten and they disappeared, that was three years ago. Now I only get them when I give in to temptation.

    Take care,

    Alex
