Insomnia is the most common sleep disorder in the United states. Insomnia can happen in different ways with different people. It can be waking up a lot throughout the night and not being able to go back to sleep, Hard time falling asleep to begin with, Or waking up really early in the morning and going back to sleep is not an option for you. There are different stages on Insomnia. You can have transient insomnia which only last a few days here and there,. Short term Insomnia which last a few weeks at a time. Then there is chronic which lasts months and months. There are many reasons people have insomnia.

Stress

This is the leading cause people have insomnia. With the world today there is perfectly good reason why so many Americans are stressed out. Things such as jobs, death, serious illness or marriage troubles are the leading causes of stress. You have to figure out how you can be less stressful and get more rest. Stress is not good for your body for many reasons. If you are really stressed then you will inhibit the production of your melatonin. Melatonin is a hormone that tells you when its night and when its day time. If you throw this off tract then you are not going to get any sleep because your body does not realize that its time to go to sleep. They sell melatonin pills that help you regulate your melatonin. They can be found in your vitamin isle at your local store. You have to figure out a way to become less stressed though, otherwise these pills are not going to help you much and your body is going to have more damage done to it over time.

Medications

People don’t realize it but a lot of medications have side affect that are called sleeplessness. If you have started taking a new medication and your not sleeping well, chances are its because of that medication. These don’t have to be prescribed medications either. There are over the counter ones that can make you not be able to fall asleep. A lot of drugs contain pseudoephedrine which is a stimulant. That means its meant to get you moving. There for if you take this late in the day your probably not going to get much sleep. A lot of medications also contain caffeine. Caffeine is another stimulant that will not help you go to sleep.

Caffeine

Too much caffeine to close to bed time will keep you awake instead of going to sleep. If you have to have caffeine then drink it early in the day. You should stop all caffeine products around dinner time. This will give your body some time to wind down. Remember that a lot of foods including the famous chocolate includes caffeine. Drink lots of water after the caffeine products to insure your body is well dehydrated and to help flush the caffeine out of your body.

Female Hormones

If you are a female then this might be the whole reason you’re not getting any sleep. When you have your menstrual cycle your progesterone levels lower, which in turn can make you have sleep problems. Start paying attention to when your having your sleep issues. If its right before or right after your menstrual cycle chances are this is the problem. If your an older women and your going through menopause then you still have this problem. Chances are yours is even worse than a younger women. Along with low progesterone levels you have added hot flashes which cause a lot of sleepless nights.
