Kidney stones can be the most painful things on earth. They form in the kidney and when they begin to crawl to another place they are excruciating. A lodged stone will block the flow of urine and cannot be ignored. The severe pain is the best known symptom but others include;
- Nausea and vomiting
- Fever and chills
- Blood in the urine
- Bladder irritability
- Abdominal bloating
Some stones are no bigger than a grain of sand but still cause excruciating pain. Some stones are many times larger.
Who gets them?
- Men aged 40 and over
- People with a family history of stones
- Heavy users of alcohol
- People who have prolonged bed rest
- Anyone with gout or over absorption of calcium
- Doctors are convinced that drinking plenty of water could prevent kidney stones.

I’ve read in one article before that calcium can actually help prevent kidney stones. So, this can be confusing for people who have read differently from others.

I’ve has the dreaded kidney stones…and bloody painful they are too!!! I was only 25 at the time, and thank god they came out naturally as in some cases they have to be removed by going in ‘backwards’ from the natural route!!! Calcium should be avoided as Ruby correctly states, and I would also add all dairy products to the list. I must admit, I rarely stick to the diet, so I will probably be inflicted with them again in the future as they can come back!!!

If the stones are small enough, drinking lots of water can help you pass them. (I won’t say “easily”)
Great article on kidney stone awareness. Thanks, Ruby.

Great article, Ruby. It looks like one ailments meat is another ailments poison! Avoid vitamin C and cut down the chance of developing kidney stones but increase the chances of colds or even scurvy!

Kidney stones…One of the most painful and dreaded problems. My brother suffered from it for almost a week and tried different home remedies first, then some prescribed medicines, finally a surgery. He suffered for days together. I have been drinking lots of water, ever since seeing him suffer. IT is definitely something that has to be given importance. I heard eating radish on a regular basis, will get rid of kidney stones. So I am doing that too.
