Sciatica is a very common problem faced by many people but is very commonly seen in pregnant women. Sciatica refers to inflammation of the sciatic nerve which is the longest and thickest nerve of the body.

Sciatic nerve arises from the lumbosacral plexus ( a plexus of nerves arising from the lumbar and sacral  part of spinal cord) passing down the hip and thigh muscles it ends in the calf muscles.

There are multiple reasons of sciatic nerve compression leading to severe nerve pain, such as

1- Spinal stenosis ( narrowing of the vertebral canal at the point of origin of this nerve),

2-Spinal cord tumors ( at the point of origin of this nerve)

3-Muscle spasms ( as this nerve passes between a number of muscles during its course from lower

back to the calf of each leg, spasm of any of these muscles causes compression and thus pain)

4-Arthritis ( inflammation of the vertebral discs can cause sciatic nerve compression)

    5-Spinal Injury (accidental or surgical)

6- Disc displacement ( very common cause)

7- Pregnancy : Sciatica is very common during pregnancy as the nerve is compressed by

the growing size of uterus inside the pelvis and also because the back bone comes under

stress by the forward bulging belly which shifts your center of gravity.

  8. I have spinal stenosis and yes, I do suffer from sciatic pain on occassion. Ever since I got a body pillow, I can not sleep without it! Between that and my chiropractor, I can finally be free of the pain 95% of the time at least! Great article :)
