Komen Breast Cancer Funding for Planned Parenthood

Susan G. Komen made a decision last week to cut off funding for Planned Parenthood. There was such a hue and cry from the public that they reversed the decision a couple of days later. There were reports that the funding cut was due to the influence of Karen Handel former Georgia secretary of state, and now Komen’s vice president for public affairs has not commented.

Last week the Susan G. Komen for cure of breast cancer charity announced it’s plans to stop funding to Planned Parenthood, then changed their minds after the public fury. Many long time supporters felt the decision was politically motivated. Komen, the country’s most widely known breast cancer organization were stunned at the public response. Planned Parenthood provides birth control contraceptives, necessary abortions, mammograms and cancer treatment to women who cannot afford to pay. It saves lives that would be lost without the services.

Alyce Lee Walker had never given money before but when she learned of the cut in funds, went on line to donate $188. Then she took all the pink ribbon stickers that represent Komen off all her belongings. When she worked on Wall Street, Walker had solicited donations from anyone who had a mother, sister or anyone who was a fan of breasts in general. Now, she was disgusted.

Not everyone felt that way. Tony Lauinger, state chairman of Oklahomans For Life said, We were very happy to see funding discontinued. It’s counter productive that the organization would be giving funds to Planned Parenthood, which is a provider of abortions.

Reports both asserting and denying that Karen Handel, former Georgia secretary of state and unsuccessful 2010 candidate for the Republican nomination was behind the decision by Susan G. Komen to cut off funding for Planned Parenthood. Breast cancer survivors were the most outspoken, especially those who had donated many hours to Komen, manning the phones and joining the walks, often with bloody feet.

Katie Ferdinand of Basking Ridge, N.J. went on Face book and urged everyone to join her in contributing to Planned Parenthood. The organization received $3 million between Tuesday evening and Friday afternoon with funds to continue it’s breast health services. She later said, I am grateful to Komen for their misguided decision.

So alls well that ends well. $3 million was donated to Planned Parenthood from supporters and Komen reversed their decision to cut off the charity and will continue their donations. Many more women will survive breast cancer due to their decision.
