Malaria Treatment and Medicine

This tells about the history and medicines used to treat malaria.

To prevent malaria, in 1988 the World Health Organization, an agency of the UN, created a program to reduce the cases of malaria across the world. The program stresses using insecticides and mosquito nets for homes and beds. They hope to increase the use of drug treatment and prevention of mosquito bites. Researchers are also working to create a better malaria vaccine. For treatment of malaria, a drug called quinine which is made from bark of the cinchona plant has been the main treatment for almost 400 years. In the 1980’s however a new drug was created. Artemesinin was made from an herb used in traditional Chinese medicines. Today, this is the most affective treatment for malaria.
