Marriage AND Your Genotype

Sickle Cell-Anemia is an inherited disease of the red-blood cells. It occurs where the red blood cells have a sickle shape which makes them deficient. A healthy red blood cell is responsible for the vitality in the human body. Un-healthy red blood cells do not carry out the full function of the blood platelets hence the occasional sickness of the patient involved. It places families on undue pressure and hospital problems. People with sickle cell anemia have problems in their joints and usually have excruciating pains. They seldom come down with various diseases. It is against this backdrop that couples and intending couples should endeavor to know their genotypes before tying the proverbial nuptial nut.

 

Marriage is a blissful union. It is an honorable union which requires input from both parties concerned. Among the numerous things that can affect the blissfulness of a marriage, the coming of children ranks first on top of the list. In many parts of the world, people are unaware of the risks involved in getting married without proper test to ascertain the genotype of the parties concerned. The result of this careless act is the delivery of children who have sickle cell- Anemia.

There are three groups of genotype namely: AA, AS and SS

AA:  People with this genotype carry the normal hemoglobin which can be transferred to their offspring.

AS: This genotype group has one deficient and one healthy gene. The said person is said to be a carrier. They don’t exhibit the traits of people with sickle cell anemia because they are just carriers, hence, the dominant ‘A’ gene overshadows the effect of the ‘S’ gene.

SS: Both genes are defective from both parents and result in the birth of a sufferer of sickle cell anemia.

This disease can be avoided because it is inherited from parents. It is on record that in the UAE (United Arab Emirates) people with AS are not allowed to get married because of Government Policies.  Intending couples need to respond to  the need to have a healthy environment  by ensuring they know their genotype before getting married as this would save them the pain of seeing their children in hospitals and seldom helpless.

                             “I lost two (2) sisters to sickle cell anemia . It drowned the family savings .I had to leave school to be with them almost every time. The annoying part is that we lost them after some years.”
