Aside from insomnia, there are still some other common sleep disorders that exist such as sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome and narcolepsy.

Below are the brief explanations of each types of common sleep disorders:

Sleep Apnea

It is a common sleep disorder associated with temporary loss of breathing due to a blockage of the upper airways. These pauses in breathing distract sleep which leads to often awakening from time to time.

Although most people don’t remember such awakenings, during day time, they feel its effects in some other ways like exhaustion, irritability and depression and reduced productivity.

Sleep apnea is a serious sleep disorder and possibly life-threatening. If you feel like you have such condition, it is strongly recommended to seek medical attention immediately. The condition is treated through the surgical process called Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP), a mask-like device that delivers a stream of air while you sleep

Signs and symptoms of sleep apnea include loud snoring, frequent pauses in breathing while sleeping, gasping, snorting or choking during sleep, feeling unrested and unrefreshed during the day, waking up with breathing difficulty, chest pains, headaches, nasal congestion or dry throat.

Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS)

It is a sleep disorder that caused an almost irresistible urge to move the legs or even arms. The difficulty to move takes part when you’re resting or lying down and is usually due to uncomfortable, aching or creeping feelings.

The common signs and symptoms of restless legs syndrome include uncomfortable feelings deep within the legs, leg sensations get worse at night and cramping and jerking of legs during sleep.

Narcolepsy

It is a sleeping disorder that involves excessive sleepiness even during daytime. Such condition is caused by a dysfunction of the brain mechanism that controls the sleeping and waking of a person. Also, even while you are talking, working or driving, you may feel sudden urge to sleep.

Common signs and symptoms of narcolepsy include seeing and hearing things when you’re sleepy or dreaming before falling asleep, suddenly feeling weak or losing control of the muscles during sudden emotions, having intense dreams, feeling paralyzed and unable to move when waking up or dozing off.

Treatments of the said sleep disorders vary but always remember that there is nothing more than natural sleep remedies. Aside from being safe to health, it also prevents people from being drug dependent.
