Preventing Heart Disease
The simple ways you can save yourself from the number one killer.
- Eat healthily
By eating a diet low in saturated fat and getting your 5 portions of fruit and vegetables a day you can decrease your chances of having a heart attack significantly. - Be more physically active
You should be exercising for atleast 30 minutes a day 4 times a week. You could go swimming, walking, gyming or you could even try out some of the new fitness games from the comfort of your own home. - Stay at a healthy weight
Work out your BMI and make sure you stay within the healthy range. Being underweight or overweight can increase your chances of heart disease. - Stop smoking
Smoking is a major factor for developing a condition known as hardening of the arteries and causes most cases of heart disease in people under 50. - Limit your alcohol consumption
Avoid binge drinking and stick to the limits of a maxium of 3 units a day for women and 4 units a day for men. - Control your blood pressure
You should be eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly to keep your blood pressure down. If you do have high blood pressure you should be taking the appropriate medication as recommended by your GP. - Control your diabetes
Diabetics have a greater risk of developing heart disease or other heart conditions such as Angina. People with diabetes should always control their blood sugar levels and should be eating a healthy diet and keeping active. - Take any prescription medicines
If you have been prescribed any medication for high blood pressure or high cholesterol it is vital you take it to stop any other problems developing.
