Seven Smart Ways to Reduce The Risk of Breast Cancer
Although breast cancer can happen to anyone and its occurrence is unpredictable, you can still detect the cancer risk if you are helping yourself by taking preventative ways to reduce the risk and to prevent its occurrence.
Breast cancer is always regarded as the most common type of cancer occurring among females, even though it may also happen to males. Many people die of breast cancer each year worldwide. This cancer can happen to anyone. Definitely, not all breast cancer risk factors can be avoided, but some preventative ways can be taken to help reduce its risk by altering your eating habits and lifestyle.
Some recommended ways to help reduce your breast cancer risk are as follow:
Exercise Regularly
You should always keep yourself active by doing physical activities. A study shows females who exercised at least 4 hours per week had had as low as 37 percent of their breast cancer reduced in comparison to those inactive women. This is because exercise may help cut off estrogen production through ways of reducing fat as well as burning calories.
Having a Mammogram Annually
A mammogram is a medical option that helps detect breast cancer. It is very helpful that cancer can be observed 2-5 years before you could feel a lump in your breast. If you are 40 and above, you are advised to have a mammogram or any clinical breast exam annually, so that your doctor can treat you effectively, as earlier detection of the presence of breast cancer can lead to a better chance of cure. Rather, having a mammogram within the recommended period can help save many lives, and may annually help save about 15,000 lives in the United States.
Taking Vitamin E Supplement
Vitamin E was associated with decreased risk of developing breast cancer. In one study carried out at SUNY in Buffalo, participants with a family record of breast cancer and who consumed diets containing 10 or more IU of vitamin E per day had had 80% reduced risk of developing breast cancer. Prior to taking vitamin E supplement, you should talk to your doctor regarding the dosage that you should take for a safety purpose.
Considering an Option of SERM
You may consider an option of Selective estrogen receptor modulator, or SERM. In breast cancer prevention trials, a drug like Tamoxifen is used. This is also a common breast cancer treatment which may help prevent breast cancer. However, many doctors believe its side effects outweigh its benefits. They believe that the use of Tamoxifen may increase risk of blood clots and endometrial cancer. This option should only be taken by those who are categorised as a high-risk for breast cancer. By now, researchers are still studying Evista, a newer selective estrogen receptor modulator which is claimed to have lower side effects but similar benefits as offered by Tamoxifen.
