Standing Up Causes Piles!
Piles can be extremely painful. There are many causes, including not eating enough fiber and straining whilst going to the toilet. But did you know that standing up also causes piles? Find out why here.
Piles, or Hemorrhoids as they are otherwise known, is where the blood vessels in the anal canal have become swollen and this causes swellings inside or outside of the rectum. There are many causes as to why this happens, but one theory that keeps popping up is that standing up can cause piles.

It is not just standing that is thought to cause piles, with sitting also a common cause. The reason why standing or sitting causes piles is because when you are in the same position for a long period of time, the blood flow to the veins in the rectum is compromised, leading them to swell.
The reason that standing can cause piles is that while standing the nature of gravity leads everything downwards. This means your abdomen puts pressure on everything below and can cause piles.
Obviously some people have to stand up for long periods of time for their employment, or sit down as well. However, you should not panic because there are many other causes of piles as well, these include:
- A weakness in the vein walls, which is hereditary.
- A poor diet
- Constipation can lead to piles because it is natural to strain.
- Pregnancy can also lead to piles.
- Heavy physical exercise
- Bowel cancer as it puts pressure on the abdomen.
- Obesity
- Bowel disorders like IBS and Crohns disease.
So, although standing up and sitting down are thought to cause piles, there are many other factors to consider when thinking about the causes of piles, although one should think about standing and sitting for too long.

I’ve suffered. Glad people write about these things openly nowadays. Took me years to pluck up the courage to go to the docs about it. In my experience a fairly balanced diet is good, but the most difference I saw was after an op to ‘band’ them, when I was told to exercise my sphincter…..lovely….Grip your bum closed like you’re trying to stop wind popping out in a public place, do it three times a day for ten repetitions. The beauty of this is that it clenches your buttocks naturally, and also tightens your tummy muscles and straightens your posture in one swift movement. Great for your abs. DRINK MORE WATER too…..Best advice I ever had. Anyway, concise piece and well written (fibre spelling?).
