The Astounding Benefits of Milk Thistle
Toxins are every where; in what we eat, drink and breathe. Add to that over the counter medications, prescribed medicines, fats, alcohol, and cigarettes, and you have an overworked liver. What are you doing to help yours?
At the writing of The Green Pharmacy in 1997 Dr James A. Duke wrote:
“The leading cause of liver disease is alcohol, which causes cirrhosis… Alcoholic liver disease is the fourth leading cause of death in (America) 25 to 64 year old men.”
Dr. Duke’s favorite herbal for the treatment of liver disorders is milk thistle.

Milk thistle (Silybum marianum), also known as Mary thistle and holy thistle is sometimes called silymarin for one of the main components found in the plant; one that is used to treat a variety of ailments. This flowering herb grows in the Mediterranean region and has been used thousands of years-NCCAM According to Dr Stengler this plant can also be found growing in parts of Europe, Russian, Asia, America and North Africa. The colonists brought it to North America.
Impactinghealth.com advises “the leaves of the Milk Thistle make a wholesome and delicious food, that has been popular in Europe, especially in France.” It can be cooked or washed and eaten raw in a salad after removing the spiny part of the leaves. The white sap found in the plant is believed to improve lactation for nursing mothers.
This beautiful flowered herb grows up to 6 feet tall and contains prickly edged leaves with white streaks. It blooms from May to June and then bears shiny black seeds which if not collected will cause new plants for the following year as Mother Nature renews her herbs. If collected can be used for cultivation, consumption, or infusion of herbal benefits.
A Roman naturalist named Plino studied milk thistle in the first century A.D. , and noted the usefulness in milk thistle in removing excessive bile from the liver and improving liver function. Impactinghealth.com advises silymarin extracted and infused from the seeds aid in the growth of new liver cells according to over 300 studies which have been performed.

Very informative article. Milk thistle is an excellent plant that we all should incorperate into our diets. The toxins our bodies taken in every day can be damaging to our health and milk thistle is a great weapon against that damage.

Pam, you may have found a “gold mine”. I can see you starting Pam’s thistle marketing – I’m picking on you, but milk thistle is awesome for it’s healing properties. Any time a plant can claim restorative power for our kidneys and liver, among other things, we should not ignore it.
