The Present That is Pregnant with Optimism
Persistent medical research is the only avenue through which scientists can direct their efforts to find a cure for cancer, a disease that continues to claim millions of precious lives. But there is a great deal of hope that, in the not-too-distant future, researchers will finally meet with success.
It is heartening to know that a great deal of research is being conducted in the way of finding a cure for cancer. Experiments are presently in progress and constantly discussed in medical conferences on the subject of copper reduction, macrobiotic diets, as well as cytoluminescent (light) therapy from Ireland. The following are major goals to be reached:
Control of Toxic Levels of Copper: One of the major goals in cancer research is to figure out how to arrest the growth of new blood vessels (angiogenesis) that feed tumors. Since the early 1970s, the retardation of this growth is recognized as a major cancer control factor. George J. Brewer, MD, professor of human genetics and internal medicine at the University of Michigan, was successful in conquering Wilson’s disease — a rare, inherited condition, associated with toxic levels of copper. The development of a safe, inexpensive drug called tetrathiomolybdate (TM for short) helped reduce the copper levels of Wilson’s desease to normal. Researchers are now convinced that TM could likewise lower levels of copper in people with cancer.
Macrobiotic Diets: A clinical professor of urology at George Washington University Medical Center, began a macrobiotic program that causes patients to lose weight. The emphasis is on low-calorie cuisine that is animal fat-free, consisting only of grains and vegetables.
Irish Light Treatment: For almost 100 years, a cancer treatment therapy, known as photodynamic light therapy, has been used. Doctors in Ireland have pioneered a new variation called Cytoluminescent Therapy (CLT). Patients that are candidates for such a therapy get a drug that renders cancer cells vulnerable to a special light treatment that destroys cancer cells, leaving healthy cells untouched.
Hopefully, there will come a day when the scourge of cancer will become a disease of the past.
