The Swine Flu
A brief guide to flu safety and the real story on the swine flu.
There is real concern that the Swine Flu could be the next pandemic to sweep the world. There have been over a thousand documented cases in Mexico as well as over one-hundred confirmed deaths. As of today (Thursday April 30th) the CDC has officially confirmed 109 cases in the U.S. and one death. The Swine Flu has also been discovered in numerous countries worldwide. Swine Flu, researchers worry, is potentially more deadly because humans have no naturally immunity built up to defend themselves from a viral strain that is a combination of the pig and human flu viruses. Researchers are also concerned because there are no vaccines available yet for this flu. While these statements are all facts let us also consider what they have not really emphasized about the Swine Flu.
First, all of the cases in the U.S. have been mild and have been treatable by common anti-viral drugs. Second, the only death in the U.S. was an infant who contracted the disease in Mexico and came to the U.S. to seek treatment in Houston. Had this infant contracted the regular flu virus it is a good possibility that he may have died anyway because the normal flu virus typically is most severe for the young and old. While there is reason to be concerned and to take some precautions there is no need for the media to sensationalize this event. Here are some useful tips for preventing the spread of the flu.
1) Wash your hands frequently. When you get to work: wash your hands. When you get home: wash your hands.
2) Carry and use hand sanitizer frequently. Hand sanitizer is a quick way to eliminate germs while on the go. Keep a bottle of it in your car.
3) Cover your mouth when you sneeze or cough. This is a no-brainer. The flu virus spreads easily through airborne transmission. If you cover your mouth you eliminate some risk to people who may also be in the room.
4) Take some extra Vitamin C. This is a great way to boost your immune system. Drink a glass of orange juice or take a vitamin c pill.
5) Drink rooibos tea. This is an African Bush Tea that has been shown to have excellent immune boosting qualities as well as antioxidants. The Strand Tea Company has an excellent selection of rooibos teas.
Finally, if you get sick. Use a sick day and try to recover. If your still exhibiting signs of the flu the next day go and see your doctor.
