The Symptoms of Heartburn

A detailed explanation of heartburn, including its affects, causes and dangers of symptoms. Read and enjoy!

Heartburn occurs when body acids pass into the food pipe which is called the gullet. Stomach acid reflux is what we can call this.

During the lives of many people, they have stomach acid reflux. Sometimes, they’ll have it as heartburn or acid.

But What Causes Heartburn?

Heartburn usually occurs when someone has a big meal or if they drink a lot of alcohol. It can also happen when someone bends over or lies down.

Each person has different rates of the stomach acid reflux. It can occur very little for some but on the other hand, it can occur every time whether weekly or daily.

Is it dangerous?

Usually, heartburn affects people’s wellbeing. It can get very annoying and painful when it always comes. At times, in the food pipe, heartburn can develop into a membrane inflammation known as Oesaophagitis. This can cause rare bleeding or chronic anaemia.

There can also be a tightening in the food pipe caused by scars due to the reflux oesophagitis becoming complicated.

A serious condition would be if the gullet stricture prevents swallowing. It is best to get that examined immediately for treatment.

How does this acid end up in my food pipe?

There is a ring of muscle (sphincter) located at the bottom of the food pipe. The acid passes through a hole in the diaphragm.

The system works as a one way valve as the diaphragm holds the sphincter in place. If this valve does not work properly, the acid from the stomach has the way to pass up into the food pipe. By having large amounts of food in the stomach can increase this from happening. If you are overweight, there would be something pressing onto the stomach.
