This Little Fish Could Save Your Life!
The British Heart Foundation announced Tuesday (February 1st, 2011)the launch of a research project who will investigate the possibility of recovery of the heart muscle after various cardiac conditions such as infarcts or weakened heart muscle.
Researchers hope to replicate the ability zebrafish, which has the ability to heal its heart muscle.
Professor Peter Weissberg said that since the founding of the institute, BHF has endeavored to provide solutions for better diagnosis and cure of various diseases of the heart. The biggest problem, he said, is how a heart recovers after being affected by a cardiovascular accident .

Research will have as a starting point the amazing ability of the Zebra fish, which can regenerate its heart muscle in a few weeks, even if much of it has been extirpated. Thus, researchers hope that in future, their patients will recover after a cardiovascular accident is just as easy as it is now to recover from a bone fracture.
Representatives of the BHF estimate that 50 million pounds will be needed for this project, money that they hope to get from donations.
