Throat Pouches (Diverticula)

Usually no treatment is required. If there is a disruption occurs in the process of swallowing or aspiration into the lungs, can do surgery to remove throat pouch.

DEFINITION

Throat pouches (diverticula) is an abnormal protrusion of the esophagus, which sometimes lead to difficulty swallowing.

There are three types of esophageal pouch:

Pharyngeal pouch or Zenker diverticulum

Midesofageal pouch or traction diverticulum

Epifrenik bag.

CAUSE

Any type of bag esophagus have different causes, but chances are all related to ingestion and uncoordinated muscle relaxation, as occurs in achalasia and spastic disorders of the esophagus that spread.

SYMPTOMS

A large bag filled with food can be regurgitated later when the patient lying down or bending. This can cause food inhaled into the lungs during sleep and there was aspiration pneumonia. Sometimes this can be enlarged throat sac and cause difficulty swallowing.

Diagnosis

To diagnose esophageal pouch, usually sineradiograf examination performed during patient swallowing barium.

TREATMENT
