Traditional Home Remedies for Eye Problems

Our ancestors used many strange concoctions to heal illnesses before the days of modern medicine. While talking to my older relatives, I have run across a few that are said to treat eye problems. They are all sworn to work.

For Inflammation of the Eyes

Mix a poultice of bread crumbs, egg white, 3 drops of brandy and a pinch salt. Apply in a cheesecloth bag, directly over the eyes, when laying down.

Also to Treat Inflammation

Mix a poultice of boiled applesauce and egg yolk, and apply to the sore eye. Change the poultice regularly, so that it doesn’t dry out, until the eye is well.

To Cure a Sty on an Eyelid

Put a teaspoon of black tea in a small cloth bag and moisten with a teaspoon of boiling water. Apply over eyelid and leave overnight.

To Relieve Sore and Red Eyes:

Bruise a red cabbage leaf and mix with the white of an egg. Apply to eyelids and leave overnight.

To Strengthen Weak Eyesight:

Mix 1/2 ounce each of cloves, nutmeg, English saffron, and a hand full of eye-bright leaves, and grind into a powder. Put a pinch of this powder inside a raisin and eat each morning with breakfast.
