Treating a Peptic Ulcer
Self help advice for this common and painful condition
Needless to say, any medical condition is best diagnosed by your regular doctor, so I won’t go into the details on how you decide this is what is wrong with you in the first place. However, once you are certain this is what ails you, the following methods may help to bring lasting relief.
- Minimize your intake of Aspirin and similar over the counter drugs. These are well known for aggravating peptic ulcers
- Smoking can also aggravate the condition, cut down or give up if you smoke.
- Alcohol, sadly, can also make things worse. Approach alcohol with moderation if you are unable to give it up completely.
- Drink a large glass of water about half an hour before each meal. This helps the stomach produce the soothing mucous that buffers the stomach when you eat. In many people, this alone can be the biggest help in self treating an ulcer.
- Some foods make things worse, but some can really help. Try starting the day with a banana and a cup of chamomile tea. These both soothe the stomach and help protect from acidity.
- Broccoli and cabbage are also reputed to help, make these a regular part of your diet.
- Go for high fiber but low carbohydrate options where possible. Sugar is not your friend if you have an ulcer
- Learn to relax, stress is a big factor in ulcer flare-ups.
- Check for food intolerances. Wheat intolerance, lactose intolerance or fructose intolerance can all make an ulcer more painful.
- Limit caffeine. A little is fine, but try to alternate with bland drinks.
