Triglycerides” Tips for Lowering Blood Fats

The principal source of fat circulating in your blood are triglycerides and cholesterol. However, the following article dwells exclusively on the former.

High cholesterol results in clogged arteries, but as far as triglycerides are concerned, the trouble is yet not well-defined.  According to John LaRosa, M.D., Director of the Lipid Research Clinic, George Washington University School of Medicine and Chairman of the American Heart Association’s Nutrition Committee,  it is somewhat safe to say that triglycerides do not have any bearing on heart disease.  It is actually associated with low levels of HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol).

Normal levels of triglyceride can run from 40 to 250 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dl), a fairly broad range.  Levels of 250 mg/dl to 500 mg/dl are considered to be “borderline elevated.”  Level over 500 mg/dl are considered to be high.  It is preferable to maintain a level of 150 which is considered to be safe.  Bear in mind, triglycerides can be controlled just as levels of cholesterol can be controlled.

Some helpful tips: l)  Cut back on fat in the diet;  2) Go in stages;  3) Substitute complex carbohydrates for fats whenever possible;  4) Major contributors to high triglyceride levels are candy, sugar and other sweets from which you should abstain;  5) Lose weight;  6) Exercise;  7) Avoid alcohol;  8) Get hooked on fish oil.  It contains omega-3 fatty acids, or you can use fish oil capsules.

Those with high triglyceride levels should also eat rice. It is fat-free and can help you lose weight.
