Triphala Herbs for Hair

Triphala is an Indian herbal formulation that restores hair health. Used as a hair wash, triphala nourishes hair and prevents premature graying.

Triphala is an Indian herbal treatment formulated by ayurvedic practitioners several thousands years ago. Derived from the Sanskrit word meaning “three fruits,” triphala is prepared by combining the amlaki, haritaki and bibhitaki fruits in equal parts.  It is widely used in numerous medicinal preparations as a bowel cleanser and laxative to rejuvenate the digestive tract and effectively cleanse the colon. Triphala is also increasingly used to restore hair health and is available as a whole herb in natural form, powder and capsule.

Amalaki (emblica officinalis) is a bright green fruit that combines a sour, sweet, bitter and astringent taste. It is a powerful antioxidant and immune system tonic that is used to treat a variety of chronic health conditions, as well as premature graying and alopecia. Amalaki has the highest known natural source of vitamin C, possessing over 20 times more of the vitamin than is found in an orange. The vitamin C in amalaki aids adds luster to the hair.

The Haritaki (terminalia chebula) fruit extract, exhibits antibacterial and antifungal properties that inhibit the growth of bacteria and fungi like E. coli, as well as parasites including amoeba giardia and several others. Haritaki is a laxative, astringent and purgative. As a composite ingredient in triphala, it is used as a cleanser to wash hair.

Bibhitaki (terminalia belerica) is a rejuvenator that alleviates liver and heart diseases, as well as improves voice, vision and promotes hair growth. Bibhitaki powder can be applied externally to the hair, to improve hair growth and impart color to prematurely graying hair.

Hair Treatments

Amalaki-enriched oils and shampoos can be used to promote hair growth and prevent premature graying of hair. Oil prepared from the dried amalaki fruit is used as a hair massage oil, to add luster and strength to the hair, as well as to combat premature graying and alopecia. Soak amalaki powder in water for a week and use it as a hair wash. This amalaki preparation serves as a three in one shampoo, conditioner and hair dye.

Since triphala has a strong taste, it should be consumed either with juice or honey. While triphala is commonly available as a pill, the powder is much more effective. Triphala powder should be mixed with a little cold or warm water, or simmered in water and drunk as a medicinal tea. A decoction of triphala powder can also be used as a hair wash to nourish hair and prevent premature graying.
