Ulcer: Problem and Treatment

One of the symptoms of ulcer, is intermittent pain in your gut. However, a bleeding ulcer can be serious.

If you experience pain in your stomach from time to time, the best advise is to check your stools to see if there is any blood , in which case, you should see your doctor without any delay.  A bleeding ulcer can drastically lower your blood pressure when you lose a lot of blood, accompanied by nausea and dizziness. Stools can be black or bright red.

Doctors generally advise patients, suffering from ulcer, to abstain from chili, pizza, tacos and any other hot and spicy foods.  Bland foods are recommended,  a requirement not generally pleasing to many patients who enjoy the flavor of certain foods to which they may be accustomed.  However, according to Steve Goldschmid, M.D., assistant professor of medicine in the Division of Digestive Diseases at Emery University Hospital, Atlanta, Georgia,  there is no proof of any therapeutic benefit from altering a patient’s diet.  Nevertheless, doctors do commonly recommend a bland diet, in order to avoid the presence of stomach acid that causes the problem, in the first place.

Approximately, 5 million Americans suffer from ulcers that can be particularly stubborn and perhaps develop into a chronic disease.  Ulcers come and go but the following helpful tips may hopefully help in getting rid of your ulcers sooner: l) If certain foods , such as an ice cream sundae or a pizza, cause the ”fire” in  your stomach, common sense should dictate that you should stop eating such foods.

  1. Avoid eating spicy, hot foods, or any food that starts a “fire” in your stomach.
  2. Do not drink a lot of milk.  Studies show that milk stimulates stomach acid secretion that causes pain.
  3. Use over-the-counter antacids.  According to an Australian researcher, one of the best cures for ulcers may be Pepto-Bismol.  However, the study is not conclusive, although it does not hurt to give it a try.  There are other antacids that may help to treat symptoms.
  4. Do not take too many pain relievers.  They can be hard on the stomach lining, such as aspirin.
  5. Do not smoke.
  6. From a psychological point of view,  you should express your feelings, as by not doing so, you may be likely to develop ulcers.
  7. Eat normally. Food neutralizes stomach acid. This does not mean that you should eat foods that can be upsetting to your stomach.
  8. Stop taking any kind of iron supplement. It can be a gastric irritant.
  9. No alcohol.
  10. Ulcers have cycles. A lot of them may burn out over a period of time.

In conclusion, bear in mind that stress may worsen the problem if you already have the disease.
