Vascular Dementia Causes
Vascular Dementia causes or triggers include stroke, which may occur as small events over time or as one massive event.
With vascular dementia, the oxygen supply to the brain is cut off. This causes brain cells to stop functioning and die. The disease progresses slowly and people who have it experience a gradual decline in their cognitive functions.
Symptoms of Vascular Dementia
Vascular dementia is not the same as Alzheimer’s disease. However they are two of the most common forms of dementia. When the brain is damaged in this way, the individual who is affected may experience mood swings, problems with reasoning and loss of memory.
When a person has a stroke, they may have symptoms that remain steady for a while and then suddenly worsen. Some of symptoms of vascular dementia include seizures, severe confusion and paralysis. An individual who is affected by vascular dementia may be able to communicate well at one point and then suddenly have problems with their reasoning or concentration.
They may also have problems with visual perception. For example, they may look at a tree and see it as a shrub, or look at a patch of grass and identify it as a rug. They may sometimes hear or see things that are not there. That is, they may sometimes suffer from hallucinations.
Treatment for Vascular Dementia
- Treatment for Vascular Dementia involves using drugs to slow the progression of the disease.
- Aspirin is one of the medications that have been shown to help.
- Doctors also prescribe medication to decrease the likelihood that their patients will have new strokes.
- Underlying diseases that may contribute to stroke, such as hypertension, are also treated. Medications like pentoxyfilline are employed in order to increase blood flow to the brain.

Yes – there are drugs around now that can slow down the progress of the disease – if caught early enough. Great article. Well-written too.
