The Internet has been a godsend for people with mesothelioma and asbestos related cancer.

Fifteen years ago I lost a very dear family member to mesothelioma, which is an asbestos related cancer. This type of cancer is caused by exposure to asbestos, and it can appear many years after the asbestos exposure. My family member’s exposure was actually 30 years earlier, when he was working on a construction job.

The prognosis was not good when my relative learned he had mesothelioma. Back then, statistics showed you had about a year to live after your diagnosis. My relative didn’t even last that long — he died in six months.

Today the picture is somewhat better. There are more treatment options, and people are living longer than before with mesothelioma.

Also, there is a wealth of information about mesothelioma and other asbestos related cancer on the Internet. You can find out so much about this disease, its prognosis, and treatment with just the click of a mouse.

Here are some Web sites with mesothelioma information.

  • Mesothelioma Web. This site has a wealth of information about mesothelioma. There is information about the cause, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment of mesothelioma and other asbestos related cancer. Check out the links page for many more resources for your research.
  • Malignant Mesothelioma. Here you’ll find both medical and legal information about mesothelioma. Mesothelioma patients can find out information here about their legal rights.
  • Mesothelioma Internet Resources. This is a page with hundreds of links to information about mesothelioma. Some of the links are for the UK and Australia, with local information for mesothelioma sufferers in those countries.

  3. Thanks John, my uncle died 7 years ago of the same thing, there wasn’t much that could be done. What was sad was he’d been living on a timebomb since he was 20 after he’d worked with asbestos, he was never going to escape it. This is an excellent article.

  4. Great job shedding light on this, John!

  5. Thanks everyone. People complain about certain aspects of the Internet (mostly porn) but we have to remember the positives. There is so much health information out there now that patients and their families are better informed than at any time in history.
