What causes blood (or bright red blood) in your feces?
Having seen the blood in your feces can cause an alarming experience. Should you be concerned about bright red, dark red, sticky, black and/or foul smelling blood in your feces? And what are the causes of bright red blood or blood in your feces?
This is a continual piece of my feces article series: Are your feces healthy?, Are your feces healthy?2, Your child’s feces: healthy or unhealthy, Effective home remedies for treating hard feces/stool problems, constipation and irritable bowel movement, Is your feces/stool normal?, what your feces tell about your health, what your feces tell about your health (part2) and How does a bowel movement affect your feces/stool and health?.
Your first reaction when seeing bright red blood in your feces may be panic or shock. This is normal since we are just humans, and you would have a similar experience when you see a doctor inject your arm with a big long needle.

Having blood in one’s feces is also a medical condition referred to as rectal bleeding or hematochezia, wherein bright red blood becomes mixed with dried blood clots or/and feces while passing through the anus. Even though rectal bleeding generally refers to blood coming from the rectum which lies up of the anus, the blood could also be originated from the other locations of the gastrointestinal system including small intestine, large intestine, stomach and esophagus.
The color of the feces is normally determined by the location to which the bleeding occurs within the intestinal tract and digestive system or gastrointestinal tract, and this also includes the part of colon, anus or rectum. When the bleeding occurs near to the anus, the blood appears to be bright red due its shorter transit time and this is always a case when blood coming out from the sigmoid colon (large intestine that is closer to the rectum), rectum or the anus. In contrary, maroon color or deep red blood comes out from the transverse colon.
