What Happens During an Asthma Attack?

Everything you needed to know about asthma attacks, what happens when you are having one and how to deal with it.

So, you suffer from asthma and you experience regular asthma attacks, have you ever wondered what exactly was happening inside your body to cause these asthma attacks? Have you ever asked yourself exactly what happens during an asthma attack?

I shall tell you, and to be honest, it’s not as complex as you may first initially think. Basically, the definition of an asthma attack is rapid worsening of asthma as a whole, the symptoms of asthma that you get on a day to day basis progress and get to a point where your body cannot breathe and this is what causes the asthma attack. Basically, during an asthma attack, the muscles that surround the airways constrict, and they become rather inflamed. This inflammation means that where the airways were already constricted, they narrow even further and this cuts short the flow of air around the lungs etc.

As well as the increasing narrowing of the airways, the cells contained within these airways also start to produce more mucous and it is normally very sticky and also very thick, making it even harder for air to get through these airways. In rather severe attacks, the airways will close up completely, with the narrowing due to inflammation and also the increasing amounts of mucous.

As a result of these happenings, the person that is experiencing the asthma attack will find that it becomes increasingly more difficult to breathe and may have coughing fits and wheezing. This is what is known as the asthma attack, and this is what happens during an asthma attack. Without medical attention, either to reduce the inflammation of the airways, or to reduce the amount of mucous, this attack can potentially become a very dangerous situation, and can leave the subject rather panicked and unable to breathe. Thankfully, there are now more medications available as well as alternative treatments to reduce the likelihood and chances of having a panic attack, leaving asthma sufferers more able to get on with their lives and not worry so much about what happens during an asthma attack.
