What You Need to Know About Statins-the Cholesterol Lowering Drugs

Statins are the most commonly prescribed cholesterol lowering drugs today. A high level of bad cholesterol (LDL) puts us at risk of developing Coronary Artery Disease (CAD), which can ultimately lead to Myocardial Infarction, commonly known as heart attack.

Statins are the most commonly prescribed cholesterol lowering drugs today. A high level of bad cholesterol (LDL) puts us at risk of developing Coronary Artery Disease (CAD), which can ultimately lead to Myocardial Infarction, commonly known as heart attack.

Even though statins are quite effective in lowering the bad cholesterol (LDL), they do not raise the levels of good cholesterol (HDL). Also it has been found that their effect wears out very fast as soon as you stop taking them.

One of the biggest side-effects of statins is that it depletes the level of Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) in our body. CoQ10 is a potent antioxidant which is also responsible for helping to convert food into energy. Low levels of CoQ10 can be dangerous to our heart since it is known for energizing our heart, and is essential for optimal performance of our heart.

Besides this, statins are also known to cause other side effects such as kidney failures, liver disorders, severe muscle aches, poor digestion, fatigue, etc.

Natural alternative to statins:

Recent research has found that Red Yeast Rice could prove to be a healthy and natural alternative to statins. Red yeast rice, besides lowering the bad cholesterol, is also known to increase the levels of good cholesterol. Also it has fewer side effects associated with its use. Moreover, the effects do not wear out as quickly, after its discontinuation.

But remember, hyperlipidemia is a serious health condition – so always consult your physician and do not attempt to self-medicate.
