What’s Causing Your Itchy Eyes?
Are you suffering from itchy eyes? Here are three things that may be causing the problem.
Itchy eyes are a common symptom and an extremely annoying one. Many people contribute to the problem by rubbing their itchy eyes which causes swelling and puffiness – a condition called chemosis. This further increases the irritation, itching, and the need to scratch – resulting in a vicious cycle of rubbing, itching, and puffiness. What causes itchy eyes and what can you do about it?
Allergies
This is the most common cause of itchy, irritated eyes and usually comes from exposure to air-borne allergens including pollen, dust, and mold. When eyes are exposed to an allergen it causes release of a chemical called histamine which leads to swelling and itching. The best way to treat itchy eyes related to allergies is to avoid contact with the allergen, but this isn’t always possible. If symptoms occur, there are various types of eye drops available that can help. If the irritation and itching is mild, an eye wash that’s been placed in the refrigerator for an hour can help to soothe irritated eyes, or you can place cold compresses or a bag of frozen vegetables over them. In more severe cases, an antihistamine based eye drop can be used. If the problem is persistent, allergy testing may be needed to determine what you’re allergic to.
Pinkeye
Pinkeye is caused by infection with a bacteria or virus. In addition to itchy eyes, a person with pinkeye may experience eye redness, burning, tearing, light sensitivity, and eye discharge. If these symptoms are present, see your doctor since antibiotic eyedrops may be needed. Pinkeye is also quite contagious, so don’t let others to use your towels and washcloths.
Dry Eyes
This condition occurs when the eye doesn’t produce enough tears for a variety of reasons – including the presence of an autoimmune disease, certain medications, working in a dry environment, or as part of the natural aging process. Dry eyes may be itchy, but it’s also common to experience burning, light sensitivity and a sensation that something is in the eye. When these symptoms occur, see a doctor since certain medical conditions such as autoimmune disease may need to be ruled out. Artificial tears can help lubricate the eyes and provide some relief.
Warning Signs of More Serious Eye Problems
If you have eye pain, see flashing lights or large numbers of new floaters, experience visual loss, or have extreme sensitivity to light, see your doctor right away since these can be signs of serious eye conditions. Don’t take chances with your vision.
