April is Autism Awareness Month
Folks with Autism are people too!
People with Autism are very sociable though at times they have a hard time being social. Their attention span is very short, they often don’t respond to things like when you call their name or try to play a game with them. Autism is a brain disorder and usually shows in a child before the age of three years old.
Many enjoy time spent with family and friends. They enjoy doing many things and like to be included in family time.
Folks need to realize and understand that just because a person has a disorder such as Autism that they are still a person and enjoy life as much as anyone else. Though they are different in reaction to things and with things, “they are not so different” They are people just like you and I!
People with Autism communicate in many different ways, there is no such thing as a person that does not communicate!
I remember when I worked for a local agency, we had a gentleman that was Autistic as well as mentally retarded. He was unable to speak and was totally bed ridden or wheel chair bound, yet we knew what he wanted because he would use facial expressions as well as motions that let us know when he was getting what he wanted or what he needed.
We often took him out to shop with us in a special van, he enjoyed the ride and also enjoyed the shopping, his eyes would just light up and he would yell his special yell that he used when he was happy but we also knew when he was done shopping and wanted to go home because he would yell louder, it was a more distinct yell than when he was happy.
Autistic people are full of strength and tolerance, as well as insight.

So very true. Autism is growing more and more common daily. So many people out there are unaware of the effects. It’s too bad that many don’t treat the autistic with love and respect.

This is a very good article. I worked in a residential treatment center for brain damaged people, and just like the man you speak of, they also are very much aware of everything. They do have distinctive grunts and yells to let you know what they want. I find them so courageous, because I don’t think I would be able to tolerate all that they have to go through. I heard that there is one out of every 100 babies born who have autism., That sounds like an incredibly large number. We are going to have to get educated about their condition and how to help them live normal lives. This is a very good information article.
