Jade, my Special Daughter

The surprising joys of my special needs daughter.

She came as quite a surprise, not as planned as we intended.

A beautiful china doll, we named Jade, tiny as could be, with big almond shaped eyes staring up at me.  Soon to be told, delays in her learning were to be expected. As far as they can see they can offer no explanation. Our hearts sank, how could this be.  Was it me to blame?  Would I feel shame?

Would we be able to hold it together?  What would her future be?  We needed to be stronger than ever.

Told she may not walk, told she may not talk.  Jade, My Special Daughter, I will stand by her side and never surrender.  I was willing to go the mile, all the while trying to smile.  As hard as I knew it might be, I would keep her safe by me.

To everyone’s surprise, walk she did, talk she did.  It took a lot of time, but it came to be.  As years went by, my delightful social butterfly, emerges at her own pace.  A wonder to behold.  A smile so warm, a heart so dear.  One of the brightest, funniest remarks, will make my day.  Loved by all, my little china doll.

Though the road is still long, I will hold strong.  I believe fate smiled and destiny followed.  With love and patience, she will make her way. One of the wonders, she belongs to me, how lucky I am to have her in my life.  How she makes me remember how all of us are unlike.

Jade, My Special Daughter, God gave her to me, how special I must also be.

  1. Lovely sharing about your wonderful daughter. love conquers much. I am happy for you and your daughter too.

  2. As the father of Jade my wife’s words hit very deep, which I could never write myself. Without Bern’s daily hard work, love and constant push to this day Jade would never be where she is today. Not a day goes by without her making our whole family laugh. We know there is a long road ahead, but we are sure she will get there.

  3. You’re daughter sounds like a lovely girl and she’s lucky to have parents like you.

  7. Jade is lucky to have strong and loving parents. I am a father of three children with autism. I know at times it seems like a long row to hoe but the joy that our special children brings makes it possible to move forward.
