Limbless Wrestlers Dominate in Sport and Life

Disability? What disability?

Have you ever heard of Kyle Maynard or Dustin Carter? If you haven’t you are missing out. These two young men are the stars of two of the biggest feel good stories of the last decade. So who are they?

They are wrestlers. One, Kyle Maynard, 23, hails from the suburbs of Atlanta, GA. He attended the University of Georgia on a wrestling scholarship. He is a spokesman for hope, has been on Oprah and is now heavily pursuing a career in MMA. (Mixed Martial Arts) Dustin Carter, 19, hails from Hillsboro, OH. Once a straight “f” student he went on to compile a 41-2 record in 2008-2009 and go all the way to the state championships.

So what do these two young men have in common? Neither of them have arms or legs.

Kyle was born without any limbs past his knees or his elbows. Dustin, due to a rare blood disease, had the same parts amputated when he was five. Neither seemed to allow that to stop them. While most would find their medical condition to be a disability these two wrestling stars believe that their “disability” is actually an advantage.

In April Kyle fought in his first MMA fight in Auburn, AL. Although he lost a judges decision he beat out expectations by lasting the fight in its entirety. In fact he actually did well. His loss was only due to a great strategy by his opponent. Maynard was unable to wrap his limbs around his opponents feet. Still, many are enthusiastic about his future in the sport.

Dustin has a bright future ahead of him as well. He wants to be a nutritionist. He wants to attend college. And if he is able he plans on continuing to wrestle. He’s just an All American kid from Ohio who overcame monstrous odds while being anything but normal. And yet he has average penmanship, loves to goof off with his friends and, well, does anything and everything other boys his age do. Except cut his own steak.

These young men are an amazing story and started off with so many disadvantages in life, yet decided that they were going to write out their own destiny. Nobody would have blamed them if they would have wanted to quit. Everyone else would have felt sorry for them, they would have understood.

Kyle and Dustin had different plans.
