Questions About the Deaf Community
A bunch of questions about the deaf community that I answered…
Through the American Sign Language class i have changed some of my opinions about the deaf and blind community.
I used to think that blind and deaf people were not as smart as hearing and seeing people but over the year i have learned they can be even smarter then hearing and seeing people. Most deaf and blind people are even just as smart as everyone else. I look back on how i used to think about deaf and blind people and say to myself that I was wrong and should have never even thought that, just because they dont have some abilities that I have does’nt make them stupid.
My favorite person that we studied this year in asl was fred schreiber he contributed by teaching deaf and blind kids to go to school and work hard. I liked him because he really put in an effort to help kids make good decisions. To me I really like people who really try to speak out to people who want to make a difference . Fred Schreiber really put out an effort to help the deaf community and im glad to have learned about him and his contributions.
The movie i picked that we watched this year was the miracle worker, the movie is about a deaf and blind girl names Hellen Keller and annie. Annie is working to help Hellen communicate with her family. This movie really taught me that you have to teach your blind/deaf kids language and manners or they will become spoiled.
My obligation to the deaf community is to treat everyone as equal not just treat everyone by abilities. Our community should also treat everyone equal and not make fun of the deaf people. I think we should all help the hearing become more apart of the deaf community and that we should help them fit in with people they know and don’t know.

That is a NICE report you wrote about what you experienced in learning about the “deaf community”. I was born deaf, and my parents worked and made sure I didn’t end up at deaf school. Growing up speaking and no sign-language and main-streaming in public high school. Until I had a kid who was born deaf and was taken from me through courts. They placed him in the deaf school because he was deaf. Made me mad but he knows the deaf community and I am just learning about the deaf community.
