Exercises for Wimps: How to Make a Homemade Kettlebell

Kettlebells can transform your body in just a few weeks. They’re used by champion athletes around the world.

Kettlebells have long been used by Russian special forces in their training workouts. For anyone unfamiliar with the concept, a kettlebell is essentially a heavy weight with a handle. It’s often called a ‘cannonball with a handle’ because traditionally it is a large ball of iron with a welded-on handle for gripping. Rumor is Zeus uses these to warm up before a long day of being a Greek god.

According to Tim Ferriss, off and on bodybuilder, dieter, nutritionist, and exercise guru, “If you could only do one movement for the rest of your life, do the kettlebell swing.”

Kettlebells are fairly expensive, so for anyone interested in getting the extreme workout provided by one, here is a simple, safe, and effective homemade kettlebell recipe that you can make for about $10. This is also called the T-Handle and has been utilized for years by Hungarian hammer throwers, who call it the Hungarian Core Blaster. Pretty epic sounding, eh? It sure is; this is the ultimate exercise for strength without weights or gym memberships

Here’s how you make the DIY kettlebell:

Go to Home Depot or any similar store and make a beeline for the plumbing section. Here, you will pick out

A- a ¾” wide x 12” long pipe with male threads on each end. This is called a ‘pipe nipple’ (teehee).

B- Two 3/4” wide x 4” long pipe nipples to use as the handles. A note for later- the outer, unused threads on the handles can be tough on the hands, so you can either cover them with electrical tape or wear gloves. Gloves look more badass.

C- a 3/4” wide “T” fitting for connecting the other 3 pipes

D- A 3/4” wide floor flange that will go under the weights on the bottom pipe.

Additionally, you’ll need weights of various sizes, the kind that slide onto a benchpress bar.

Optional, but highly suggested, a spring clamp to go over the weights so they don’t slide up the bar at the top of the swing.

  1. You can also use cement to mold the balls or just jugs of water

  2. Excellent point deebanheh. Yes, anything with weight and a grip-able handle will work as a kettlebell

  3. you can also use a tin of beans drill holes in side of bean tin then thread string through if you are quite strong leave beans in .for really strong people get the beans and sausages they will be heavier .
