Get in the Zone
What exactly do people mean when they say they’re “in the zone”? This piece explains what it is, how people achieve more when they’re in it and how to think differently so you can get that tunnel-vision.
Can you remember ever doing something and not noticing the time going by? Have you ever been so absorbed in what you were doing that you were able to cut out the rest of the world? If your answer is yes, then you have experienced what many fitness enthusiasts refer to as “being in the zone”.
When you’re “in the zone” everything seems to fly-by, things come easily – flow better. If you want to get the most out of your workout sessions, achieving maximum results with minimum effort, then learning how to get into the zone will help.
Body and Mind
Being in the zone is when your body and mind work as one and are both directed towards one specific goal or target. It is when you are focusing all your attention and efforts on achieving that one thing. Being in the zone is like having tunnel-vision on your end result – allowing nothing to get in your way or set you off track. You give it 100% of all you energy and effort towards that final goal, rather than diluting your energy by thinking of many things at the same time.
When it comes to your workouts, being in the zone is all about being clear on what you want to achieve and knowing exactly what it is you need to do, what exercises you need to perform to reach that final goal. This kind of dedicated focus is a major step towards getting in the zone.
Expect the Unexpected
Once you have mastered the skill to focus your body and mind to get in the zone, the next step is to deal with any distractions. The best way you can minimise all those negative distractions is to have a plan. By having an idea of how you will handle the distractions you will find it easier to deal with them when they appear – and they will appear.
Key Aspects
The main points to remember when it comes to taking your training to the next level and start training in the zone are as follows:
- Be clear on what it is you want to achieve
- Block out unwanted distractions
- Recover quickly from unexpected distractions and get back on the task in hand
- Be able to maintain your attention throughout your workout, concentrating on what you are doing, rather than what others are doing
On a final note, for you to get focused and get in the zone you need to know where to place your attention and energy, ensuring your attention is on the things that will help you increase your effectiveness of what you do.

Great article. When you hit the zone, you know your training has paid off. Your mind focuses and your body knows what’s expected.
Your body goes on autopilot. You hit a new personal record without even feeling the weight.
