How to Add Extra Exercise to Your Day

“I have no time.” This is one of the most common excuses given for a lack of exercise. Following is a guide for getting in some extra exercise during your day no matter how full your timetable may be.

Short Bursts

Dividing your exercise into three separate sessions of 10 minutes each is just as effective as doing one 30 minute session. Do each session before a meal or whenever you have the time. Use this time for a brisk walk, jump rope, some hill runs or resistance training (for example: sit ups, lunges and squats).

If finding time to do that one “hard out” session isn’t the problem but you’d like to get in a bit of extra fitness, curb that weight loss plateau, or feel less guilty about indulging in that dessert or large meal, at lunchtime, one suggestion is to do something quick and easy before and after each meal such as 30 jumping jacks for instance. This can also help make you more aware of your food choices and portions when you know you have to burn it off afterwards!

Get Out of Bed!

Another option is to wake up at least half an hour earlier or stay up half an hour later (I prefer the former). Indeed a bit of early morning exercise can be just the thing to get your mind alert and your blood pumping for the rest of the day. The morning is also a wonderful time for anything involving stretching and flexibility.

Make the Time

Assess how you truly spend your time. You’d be surprised by how much hours can be wasted away watching TV, on the computer, sleeping and even eating. Think about reducing your TV viewing hours by a quarter or a half and using that time for exercise. Or every time you think about food (when you know you really shouldn’t be), go for a walk or do some other physical activity that will take your mind off it.

And instead of going for coffee with friends, or visiting your mate’s place to watch the football and have beer, suggest doing something more active like a power walk, cycling or a sport. Then you will still be socialising but you and your friends will also be getting in some extra fitness!

When you really want something, remember that you must be willing to do anything to achieve it, even if it means making sacrifices. Keep your fitness goals in mind, think about how you can and will reach them and get achieving!
