How to Find the Right Gym for You
What to look for to get your workout on.
Thinking of finally joining a gym, but not sure which one may be the best for you? I’ve visited several gyms in my city over the course of ten years and have joined two. The one I am currently with has helped me lose over 50 pounds in the past year. The following is the criteria I’ve used to settle upon my membership. Hopefully it can help you find the right place as well.
Location
This may sound like a no-brainer, but you need to choose a gym that will be convenient from either your home or office. Going out of your way to workout will make it that much more difficult to stick with your fitness routine. Try choosing a gym that’s not located near a fast food joint or ice cream parlor. You’ll be too easily tempted after burning lots of calories.
Atmosphere
If you can get a free trial before actually plunking down the membership fee, try going during the times you’ll most likely visit. Take it all in. Can you see yourself spending at least three hours a week there? If they play really loud rock music and you like something a bit softer don’t fool yourself into thinking you’ll get used to it. In a way, it’s like checking out a car, make sure it’s something you’re comforatble with.
Staff
It’s important that the employees there treat you like a person and not another annoying customer. Do they greet you when you come in? Do they have towels available and ready for you? Is there someone you can go to to ask questions any time you’re there? Are the instructors friendly and on time?
Maintenance
Again, just like checking out a car or a home, make sure the facilities are well maintained. Nothing says “shop around” more than lots of out-of-order equipment and disgusting looking pools, locker rooms and workout mats.
Classes
This, above anything else, is what has kept me at my current gym. A good workout facility will offer free classes with your membership. If it’s just an aerobics class, take a pass. You’ll want diversity. Make sure you can get a good mix of cardio and strength training. Working out with a group is also a very good motivator to keep you going and follow a routine.
The Contract
Read your membership contract very carefully. Many gyms require you to be a member for several months before you can cancel. Talk it over with whoever’s signing you up and don’t be afraid or embarrassed to ask questions. That’s what they’re there for.
Don’t give up. It may take several trips before you finally settle on the right place. It’s important to realize that not everybody at a gym is going to be ripped and in better shape than you. It’s not meant to be intimidating and everyone has to start somewhere. Now it’s your turn.
Have a great workout.
