How to Keep Exercise Fun in the Sun
Tips to keep you from melting while you do your brisk walking in the sun.
A brisk form of walking called health walking is a wise exercise choice for sweltering summer days. These tips will keep you from melting while you work out.
- Drink water before, during, and after your walk to avoid heat exhaustion from water and electrolyte loss through perspiration.
- Limit food intake prior to exercise. Make meals light, low in fat, and high in complex carbohydrates. Digesting large meals can elevate body temperature.
- Walk in the early morning or evening to avoid the sun at its strongest.
- Dress for warm weather – cool, lightweight nylon track shorts; a cotton T-shirt to absorb sweat; thin cotton socks; and athletic shoes with nylon uppers.
- Wear a lightweight cap, sunglasses, and sunscreen to protect yourself from the ultraviolet rays of the sun.
