Staying Fit in an Unfit City
Is the city life taking a toll on your health? Can’t find time to hit the gym? No problem. Use the city itself.
City Life; you can’t live it and neither can you leave it. City lives are fast, rich and full of dreams while still killing you slowly. City life shows you the dreams and by the time you realize them, you realize that your life has become a nightmare. City Life; you can’t eat it and neither can you beat it.
People hate and curse the city life but there is nothing much that they can do. Then people join gyms and yoga classes only to come up with pretexts to avoid them. But what they don’t realize is that health cannot be earned through gyms and yoga classes. What is needed is a more rational approach to life in the city. The cursed city life could well be utilized to gain a fit and healthy life. How? Here’s how:
Walk
How do you travel most of the times? Drive? Ride? Hail a taxi? The most common answers of the city folk Walking is perhaps the best healthcare product currently available and the city provides its residents with ample opportunities to get it. But unfortunately the city folk are just too wrapped up with comfort.
Walking briskly increases the heart rate, increases blood circulation, burns excess fat and rejuvenates the joins. If you work near your home, walk down. If you don’t, then make it a point to walk down to the nearest public transport station. Walking is simply the best form of exercise easily available to the city folk.
Use the Stairs
Elevators and escalators have made life so easy. You just have to stand your ground while the magical contraptions lift you to your desired levels. But the very magical contraptions might be the biggest enemies to the health of the city folk.
Ever tried briskly climbing the stairs to your 6th floor apartment? I am sure, ninety percent of us would simple give up by the time we touched the 2nd floor and use the lift instead. But no. Stop! Keep climbing. Eventually, the body will get used to it and actually liking it.
Climbing stairs is harder than brisk walking and has the same benefits as those of brisk walking.
Use Public Transport
Public transport in the cities could well be an endurance test. Metros’ and local trains’ stations let you climb and descend stairs while brisk walking and running can be experienced while rushing to catch a train. Busses, though less advantageous than trains, could still solve the purpose of exercise.
Shop
Shopping could be the best exercise of all the above if you can resist the temptation. It’s addictive and does not let you realize that you how much calories you are losing in the process. Try window shopping if you can, or simply accompany a feminine friend or partner during weekends. You could end up losing more weight than you can imagine.
Do not let the city bother you again with its lack of time. Go and buy that expensive gym tool if you will or get a membership to a premier workout place. But the best place to work out could be none other than ye ol’ city.
