Walking: An Easy and Healthy Form of Exercise

Here’s an article about the benefits of walking.

When you consider the advantages of walking has over other forms of recreational exercise, you’ll start to wonder why it took you so long to get started.

High on the list of reasons walkers give for feeling strongly about their particular form of exercise is that it simply makes them feel good. They’re not imagining that.

Exercise releases endorphins in the brain, mood-enhancers that doctors call natural opiates. They reduce stress and produce a certain euphoria.

When people say they have become almost addicted to exercise, they are describing the “high” that results from the endorphin production.

The pros of walking:

  1. It can be done virtually anywhere, anytime and by anyone—no reservation or lessons needed.

  2. It’s cheap. The only equipment you need is a decent pair of walking shoes.

  3. There is less chance of injury and less risk of twisting your legs than with more strenuous exercise.

  4. Walking uses almost as many calories as more strenuous workouts. A 12 minute walk uses only 26 fewer calories than jogging a mile in 8 ½ minutes.

  5. It improves circulation and the efficiency of the lungs.

  6. It helps you lose weight and sleep better. Walking actually helps curb the appetite.

  7. It also helps prevent or reverse certain types of osteoporosis, arthritis and cardiovascular diseases.

  19. best exercise ever… i don’t take walk often, but i do agree with you that walking can improve the quality of sleep. the fact is that i found my self get sleepy easily even after minutes i took a walk lol. but it does could refresh your mind, body and soul.

  24. Walking is thoroughly beneficial and a very enjoyable way to keep fit.
    As a bipolar sufferer it is even more important to keep up a regular exercise regime, and as one ages walking becomes a really nice alternative to more vigorous forms of exercise.
    I am lucky I live near the beach and every day I walk along the beach I am reminded of what a beautiful planet we live on and how lucky I am to be alive.
    So I can’t say enough good things about walking!!

  26. I used to walk for many miles to reach school and back. I now realize that it did a whole lot of good for my body. Theses days, I seldom walk but this post has kindled my determination to strive.

  45. I love walking! It is my favorite way to clear my mind. It doesn’t even really feel like exercise. I put my favorite music on my ipod and can go for hours..

  46. Walking rocks! I walk my daughter around our neighborhood every day. It is sad that in a neighborhood of 250 houses, there are probably only about 10 couples that i see consistently out walking around the neighborhood! It is great for the body and a definite mood lifter!
