There are two forms of international weightlifting competition Olympic lifting, the “snatch’’ and the “clean and jerk’’. In the “snatch’’ from, the competitors must lift the barbell above their head in one steady movement. The most weight lifted in the snatch is approximately from the floor to the shoulders. The barbell is brought to the shoulders by jump- and – shrug motion. The athlete then jerks the bar overhead with an explosive drive of the legs and hips. After this overhead motion the competitor rapidly positions him or herself under the bar. The most weight lifted in the clean and jerk is approximately 586 pounds (266 kg).

  • Snatch: – the weightlifter must lift the bar in a single movement until the bar is above the head and the arms are fully extended.

Once the bar is above his head, the weightlifter can take as much time as he needs to straighten his position (the recovery).

  • Clean and jerk: – in the clean and jerk, the bar is lifted to the shoulders (the clean) and then to full arm’s length overhead (the jerk).

At the end of the clean, the lifter may rest the bar on the collarbones, chest, or fully bent arms, and may changes his grip.

  • Power lifting: – power lifters can lift much heavier weights than weightlifters because they do not have to raise the bar above their heads.
  • Record breakers:- first man to clean and jerk more than three times his won body- weight was Stefan Topurov( born 1964), Bulgaria, who lifted 180 kg in Moscow, USSR, in 1983.
  • Note: - on completing a lift, the weightlifter must held the position until the referee signals to replace the bar.
