10 Easy Immune Boosters
Boosting your immune system can be as easy as blogging. Here’s how.
Our immune system is like an army that protects our bodies from foreign invaders such as bacteria and virus. A weak immune system makes us susceptible to illness. Here are 10 easy ways to keep our immune system in top shape.
-
Chat with friends
Once or twice a month, I meet two of my closest friends out for dinner. It’s something I always look forward and get excited about. After about a couple hours of nonstop chatter and the loudest laughter, I always go home feeling relaxed, light-hearted and with a big smile on my face. Research has shown that laughing and confiding reduce the body’s levels of cortisol, a hormone known to suppress the immune system.
-
Journaling
Regular blogging about loneliness, anger or frustrations increase T cell response and reduces effects of stress. T cells are lymphocytes that play an important role in cell-mediated immunity.
-
Make love, not war
Research suggests that couples having sex once or twice a week may have higher levels of immunoglobulin-A, a virus fighting antibody developed and secreted by B cells. B cells are another type of white blood cells (WBC) called a b-lymphocyte that produces antibodies.
-
Get enough sleep
If you’re not getting at least seven hours of sleep, you may have an increased chance to get sick. Special immune-boosting functions come into play when you sleep.
-
Wet your whistle
Water flows through your arteries, veins and capillaries carrying vital, life sustaining nutrients to cells and transport waste out of the body. Six to eight glasses of water a day is critical for a healthy immune system.
-
Take a walk
In addition to all other benefits, strolling or hiking for about 30 minutes a day increases blood flow and raises oxygen levels in the body. Oxygen excites the immune system.
-
Listen to good music
Scientists found that antibodies increase after listening to just 50 minutes of uplifting music. Stress hormone levels, which can weaken the immune system also dropped.
-
Eat some seafood
Fish and seafood are good sources of calcium, magnesium, manganese, iron, selenium, copper and vitamins A, C, D, E and B complex, nutrients which keep the immune system healthy.
-
Get a massage
I’m a foot massage addict. It relaxes and makes me feel good all over as if toxins were released from my body. Research on regular massage therapy showed an increase in serotonin and ups natural killer cells as well as stimulates the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system combats foreign bodies such as viruses and bacteria.
-
Pray
Prayer always makes me feel relaxed and leave me feeling good. During my prayer time I get to count my blessings. Only to God I can tell all my problems or fears as well as my deepest desires. Prayer or meditation unarguably reduces overall stress levels.
