All Natural is Not Necessarily a Good Thing

Sometimes you have to think for yourself on food claims.

I noticed that a lot of food products now are saying that they are all natural expecting
their sales to go up. And they do. But in the back of my mind I’m saying, “Just because it’s natural does not automatically mean that it’s a good thing to eat.” For example, poison ivy is naturally occurring, of course it is not used in food, but the idea is the same. Or MSG, the “flavor enhancer” that’s found in many foods, especially Chinese foods, is made from all natural products including brown sugar and amino acids. But eating MSG can have serious long-term problems on the digestive system and has been suggested to increase the likelihood of developing glaucoma.

Another example would be curare, a poison used in darts in South America, which comes from various plants that grow naturally in the wild. I would not like any of this stuff in my corn flakes! I just wanted to point out that the words “All Natural” should not be sufficient enough to let our guard down and be less skeptical. Watch what you eat and remember that monosodium Glutamate is just a fancy way of saying MSG!
