Cure for Forgetfulness

Researchers in Scotland are looking into a cure for forgetfulness.

Managing a busy lifestyle, healthily

Okay we have all been there – probably some worse than others – when it comes to remembering things.

Millions upon millions suffer some form of “forgetfulness” or memory loss, whether it be short term or long term. It can be frustrating for us all when we have perhaps put something down and gone away, then totally forgot just where we put it. Passports is a common one as is remembering certain appointments should we have neglected to write them down in our diary.

So is there a cure or solution to such a problem?

Well it appears that a team of Scottish academics are taking such a subject seriously and are currently searching for a potential “cure” to such a common – and often forgotten about – subject.

The scientists leading the study at CPS Research believe this is all down to the modern way in which we live. Indeed, more and more people are forgetting due to our busy, stressful and hectic lifestyles in which we have become accustomed to over the past few decades.

The Doctors believe the link between our lifestyles and our increasing forgetfulness is due to “information overload”.

There is a name for such a condition. It is called Subjective Cognitive Impairment (SCI).

Scottish academics have launched a study in a bid to find a cure for forgetfulness.

Now the researchers are looking to see if such a condition can be treated – and the first port of call is to look into the drug that is used to treat Alzheimer’s Disease. That drug is call Memantine and Doctors are investigating if a low dose of the drug can in fact help forgetfulness.

Researchers believe that in modern society, such “information overload” can be due to people being inundated with information from the internet, media, newspapers, mobile phones and even blackberries.

We all know that forgetfulness tends to increase as we get older. But latest studies suggest it is affecting us much younger. However the researchers are not linking such studies with serious memory loss such as Dementia.

The study centres around basic forgetfulness, such as misplacing our car or house keys, where we left our passports or even people’s names.

Now the team are hopeful a small dose of Memantine may help with SCI.

Now the researchers are looking for “human guinea pigs” between the ages of 50 and 80 to take part in routine tests.

Omega 3 fish oils have bee linked with a variety of conditions including heart disease, stress and memory enhancement. Often termed as a brain food, more and more people are turning towards eating more fish or supplements containing Omega 3 to enhance their modern lifestyle.

But no doubt it appears a team of dedicated scientists are not forgetting to take such an area of our lives a little more seriously when it comes to finding a cure.

So, how many people are going to forget where they left those car keys today…?
