Damaged Teeth – Black Tooth
My little girl had a fall a few weeks ago and her tooth is now grey and darkening.
A few weeks ago my little girl fell and banged her face on the tiled floor.
She had big bang and her teeth were really hurting but there was no blood and everything seemed to look fine.
A few days after we noticed that one of the front teeth was a little darker than the other. This looked a bit strange but thought I would leave it a bit longer as maybe her gum could have been a bit bruised which could have made it look dark. It was not hurting her at all so I was not over concerned.
After speaking to a relative in England I found that a child in the family had also had a bad fall at a young age and their front tooth also went black. The dentists in England advised that it was ok and it would fall out when ready and nothing was done about it.
In my case I have just had a check up for my son and mentioned it to the dentist at the same time. She asked me to bring my daughter in as soon as possible as it should not be left until her next check up as they can cause infections in the gum and can cause problems with the adult tooth that will be developing.
My daughter has just turned 3 but after visiting the dentist she said that the tooth was dead. All the inside was dead. She advised me on how she had seen children that had a black tooth and it had developed into an infection causing a lot of pain very quickly and suggested that in her opinion she would prefer that tooth to be removed. I am a little upset about that as she is only 3 and it will be a long time before her new tooth grows.
My dentist has also said she does not want to remove the tooth and cause upset to my daughter which was considerate and has suggested that I contact a child specialist dentist to discuss further and have a second opinion. Luckily we know a great dentist that we can use so we will be booking an appointment with him as soon as we can.
The main reason I am writing this article is to make sure that if anyone comes across this and a child of theirs has a black or darkening tooth. Get it checked out! The last thing you want is your child (at any age) developing an infection in the gum and having further problems including the second adult tooth not developing correctly. Its only a quick visit and I am so glad it has now been looked at. Even if I am upset at the fact that my little princess will have no tooth in her smile for the next 4 years or so.
