Do You Sleep with an Enemy to Your Everyday Health and Well-Being?

Things you can do around your home to protect yourself and family members from the effects of dust mites.

We all harbour safe breeding grounds for nasty Dust Mites. They can be found living boldly in your mattress and pillows and affecting your daily health. Many of us keep our mattresses for over ten years. Mattresses are the perfect haven for dust mites because they collect skin debris and human skin flakes are the favorite diet of this microscopic mite. In that time dust mites can cause your mattress to nearly double in weight from the day you purchased it. This is a disgusting true fact that we all live with. In fact you are probably harboring millions of the little critters. A pin head can hold 500, they are that small. The damage they can do to your health is major. These mites can cause skin, eye and nose allergies and infections, along with Bronchitis, Asthma, headaches, fatigue and even depression. The reason why these tiny creatures are so virulent is that they are a source of allergens. A typical dust mite will excrete two hundred times its body weight in fecal matter because they have no stomach and digestion actually occurs outside their bodies. That may not seem like much from the small amount a single mite weighs but times that by several million and presto; trouble is waiting for the individual with a lowered immune system or the allergy prone. Dust mites secrete enzymes and emit the fungus Aspergillum Repens depositing them on dust particles.

These allergens enter your body as you sleep and breathe entering the breathing passage, lungs and into the bloodstream.

You can take some steps to protect yourself and your family. You can extend the healthy life of your mattresses by purchasing mattress covers that are manufactured just for this purpose. Some are lined with a plastic lining that the mites cannot penetrate. Some have been treated to repel the dust mites, although these tend to dissipate after time. Citrus acid in spray form and sprayed on after washing sheets and mattress covers help repel these mites also.

Other furniture will collect these mites, like your sofa, decorative pillows, recliner chairs and even carpeting. Airborne mites can even penetrate drapery and curtains in your home.  All natural perfume free citrus spray used after vacuuming and cleaning will help along with frequent washing of your window coverings. If you are one who suffers from allergies from the mites you may also want consider hard floor surfaces rather than carpeting.  Tile and wood are good substitutes and do not allow a breeding habitat to develop over time.  Replacing fabric window coverings with blinds can be both attractive and healthy alternatives.

There are some cleaning companies that offer dust mite control services although these types of companies are more popular in Europe they are starting to reach the US.
Making a few healthy changes in your home and especially bedrooms of anyone suffering from constant or frequent allergy symptoms and headaches will be a benefit to your entire family.
